I'll be at a standstill for a few days. Was going to attempt the rear sights now that our company is gone. But I caught something, summer cold, the crud, the whatever, and its kicking my ass right now.

Started feeling something coming on, on Wednesday night, but between then and now all I had was a sore throat. Today I've got the sore throat, plus the cough, runny ass nose, coughing up snot, no appetite....

So I'm just going to chill in bed, do some more interent reading on the 604, and generally just drool over gun porn, while I get over this.
Probably caught Gun Fever!! Rest up!!

Good Gawd those are some small ass parts in the A1 rear sight bag. I was looking at them as I was watching a video on how to install them.....Damn, I'm going to have use a box to assemble it inside of so I don't lose any parts.
Yep, I do not envy you... but I found a box for you :)

Sorry to hear you are feeling poorly. I guess it will give you some down time to do some reading as you said. Knowledge is paramount in the retro world. Over the past 15 years of building retro ARs and modern military clones, I have certainly had to do my share of reading and it never ceases. Get yourself well soon.

Yeah, whatever I caught is kicking my ass......I haven't slept this much in years. Had toast for lunch, the wife and I figured out I haven't eaten since I had dinner Thursday night.

She made me move to the couch, so she could strip the bed and wash the bedding. Now that its done she has sent me back to the room........

Company is gone, she has put the house back together, and we are relishing in the quietness......Shhh, hear that? That was a spring from the A1 style sight bouncing around the room.....LOL!

I'll tell you what.....That little ass "C" clip used on the dust cover hinge pin is friggin small. I kept looking at it, and going I'm either going to lose it or break it. Somehow I did neither.

Now a serious question. The spring for the cover.....I've read on several sites to rotate the spring 180 degrees to make it work. I did and it works great. On two or three forums, I see where people are saying 3 complete revolutions. Then bitching about how the springs don't last long, and who makes a stronger spring. Seems to me that doing the 3 twists is the issue, but what do I know....

So is it a 180 degree twist or 3 complete twists?

I do the 180. I hate those c clips. SI makes one with no clip. Someday I'll buy some.

What I do is straighten out a paper clip, place the adjustment wheel over the shaft, insert the paper clip to hold the adjustment wheel in place, and then, using a roll pin starter punch, begin tapping the roll pin in with a small mallet, thus pushing out the paper clip. The important thing is to make sure the rear sight is properly centered. You want to try and have the "1" on the wheel to be at the top (the hole for the roll pin would be vertical at this point).

Do you know what size roll pin starter punch? Regardless if this is the only build I'll do, figured I'll get the right tool, or a set that has the right tool.......

Besides you never know, I might get an itch and want to build another one.......LOL, probably not!

Not sure what size right off. I suggest getting a set like this,

Guntec USA Hollow AR-15 Roll Pin Punch Set (primaryarms.com)

    or this.

Brownells Roll Pin Starter Punch Kit (primaryarms.com)

In any event, these come in handy, especially for installing gas tube roll pins, bolt catch roll pins, and trigger guard roll pins.

Figured I'll use painters tape with, duct tape over it, to mask off the area so I don't tear things up.

When I was a kid, My dad would tell people I could tear up a steel ball bearing with a marshmallow hammer. Well.....I took a stick, a large marshmallow made a hammer and stuffed a steel ball bearing in it and left in the humid ass laundry room. After a few months I took it out to look and ball bearing was nasty. Took my marshmallow hammer and ball bearing and gave it to my dad. He'd show it off as proof I could destroy anything.

That was between 1977-1980, when he passed in 2011 he still had that ball bearing in the jewelry box.....!

A little tape to protect the receiver finish is not a bad idea. I used to do that until I really got the hang of things. I have right at about 100 builds under my belt. I did away with the tape a long time ago.

Wow, a 100 or so builds, this one is my Cherry Popper and it isn't even a total build.
