Glad your happy with your purchase G-rat. But a little time spent researching military trench brooms, and Tactical Training both Military & Civilian (LEO) may suggest that pump shotguns have just as fast a cyclic rate and an even better reliability over the entire projectile spectrum. But I understand that the average user can't match geniuses records. But a tactical shotgun that holds the speed record in the average users hands won't reach such lofty heights. JMHO YMMV.
umm... how many benelli m4s in service? pump guns are fine but in no way faster. maybe faster in the well seasoned combat veteran or old skeet shooters hands, but in regular standard hands? doubtful. i'll give ya less than lethal ammo but i ain't using beanbags if the mobs comin'... you do you, i'll continue to be happy as all get out with my 1301 thank you.

Good for you, but I'll take that substandard 590A1 into the Trenches and stick a few folks with the attached M9 while I'm reloading along the way. Sometimes folks need to agree to disagree? Now what was it that your Benelli actually proved to do better? While we are considering the debate points, perhaps you got stuck with an M9? Bayonets never run out of ammo. JMHO YMMV! There can only be one WINNER, perhaps that WINNER shall have the "BEST" Tactical Shotgun available for their skill set at the time. But at 1500 yards what use is a shotgun? CQB has been cut & slice from the begining of time, it won't change. The Bayonet at the front, and butt plate on the rear are of more consequence as long as the broomstick goes bang everytime you have a round to expend. MHO. That's a Tactical Interpretation. YMMV. Now about that Benelli, there are a lot of E-1 gate guards in service that will never spend a day in CQB or H-H in their life. But arm them with a Semiautomatic Shotgun without a Bayonet, a soft polymer butt stock, and folks that can't scratch the mark are going to think twice prior to bracing them. Hardened Veterans consider folks so armed as PREY. YMMV. Guess there is a reason that the USMC still gives recruits sticks to beat each other with in Boot camp? JMHO YMMV? TACTICAL at SHOTGUN range? Just how critical is cyclic rate when at most you have 9 rounds? Pointy front and really hard butt, that's Tactical! YMMV.

Which brings up the M3... why not, since it is pump OR semi-auto? (note: the Stoeger M3K is set up like an M3, minus the ability to switch to pump operation; i.e., the recoil spring on both is under the forend instead of in the buttstock like on the M2 and M4).

Remember one advantage of inertia-types: NO gas/grit entering the operating system. When I clean my M3K, I stick the rod down the barrel, punch a hole in the center of a patch, stick the patch on the threaded end of the bore brush, drop the brush into the ejection port, rotate the rod to thread it onto the brush, and pull everything OUT the muzzle... NOTHING gets into the receiver, and it looks like it could stay pristine... and I mean literally... forever in there! : )

Yep... when I heard "tactical", I wasn't thinking "(inside) home defense". My M3K makes a decent tactical shotgun (if I have the option to hit a 6" dot with a slug @ 100 yds... at night... that's pretty "tactical", right?), but it's useless as a "(in) home defense" shotgun : )

Tactical is a term measured in distance. Shotgun use is measured in feet. It's all about at what distance your firearm gives you the advantage. Inside of 21 feet a blade is Tactically Advantageous to a firearm. Inside of 40 feet a sidearm has an advantage against a long gun.Outside of 50 yards, you better perceive a different concept. So CQB is going to happen inside of a building with less than 20 foot rooms. Take a minute to think about that! Just how important is your cyclic rate? How about having three feet of blade length on your attacker? Perhaps I am wasting my time? But Dusty Dog just got the message. 25 Yards is not Close Quarter Battle. What room in your house is 75 feet long? It ain't about how far away, it's all about nose to nose. That's Tactical with a shotgun. JMHO.

"Substandard"... never said that. You asked, like an idiot I responded with my honest opinion. Not that it matters to you. Why ask the question to crap all over members answers? At least you're consistent...

5 pages and not a single mention of the ones that was so effective the Germs asked to be banned because they was oh so lethal and reliable. The old Winchesters. I have a Model 12 and it's a beast. Can eat any rounds including mini rounds with no adapter, (mine is a heavy duck so it can take 3's also) slamfire like a mamma jamma, solid steel milled receiver, and just down right nasty. They can even be trenched out with a heat shield and the longest bayonet ya ever seen if that floats you boat lol. Only shame is they don't make a modern "tactical" stock for them. I can live with that tho. Oh and they can break down too. Which is kinda ultra tacticool for sneaking a long gun in a bag past all the mall ninjas! Sneaky sneaky!
I'd love to get the 1897 also. Or even get a non-heavy duck forend setup with a heatsheild and bayonet. But a man can dream!

Having worked on most or shot most every thing out there, for over 50 yrs, I buy or use what I have seen hold up, will work when I need it to, and can get parts to keep it going, and easy to replace , use a 1100 Rem for bird hunting, but a Rem 870 for every thing else, I have put hundreds of rds. through mine I got three, set up. It can set in the corner for yrs and will work when you need it. Have had this happen , Set up up with a side saddle cut barrel to 18 1/2 or 20 in, vent rib , Then learn to use it, in the dark.. The problem with Auto needs for care can't depend on it , plus ammo problems, the 870 is not ammo problems. This just for starters plus starters . Just my 50 cents jj
No question the 870 is a standard. Mine has a 14” barrel and has frequently been a car gun in executive protection jobs…

    Don't mind ol' M118LR... he's probably still "celebrating" St. Patrick's Day : )
Still trying to figure out what question I asked that G-rat was answering? But if I hurt G-rat 's feelings in any way, well then I Apologize. I also apologize to the OP for taking this time in the OP's thread for apologies. Back to the topic at hand. Since there is more than one tactical type situation that a shotgun can be used in, perhaps there are different shotguns which work best for different tactical situations? Should we break down which tactical situations are best solved with which Tactical Shotgun. As DustyDog mentioned, his tactical shotgun for use afield wouldn't be of much use within the confined spaces of the house. So different tactics probably require different Tactical Shotguns? PS: If only everyday could be St Patties Day!!!! Smiley Face

^^^^ Yeah, I think you're onto something there, provided time is allowed to survey the course, choose a club, and line up the shot. I guess I've almost hijacked your thread into a what's the best jack-of-all-trades tactical shotgun thread?

Not my intent. Around the house, I'd settle for the 870 with 18 in. barrel. Jumping outta the truck and going for cover, maybe something lighter/shorter, but I'd still try with whatever I had. Even a hammer.....

Personally, I prefer the Mossberg 500 or 590. Plenty of aftermarket support for stocks and foregrips. Plenty of barrel options and magazine extensions. Pump action is slower than an autoloader, but no worries about an underloaded shell not cycling it or getting hung up. Hell, the 590 even has a magazine version, though with practice you can keep a tube mag topped off fairly easily and quickly.

So I have an 870 clone from Rock Island. It just works, and I'm satisfied with it. However, I'm really an AR guy. I build them, break them apart, put them back together again with different barrels, triggers, stocks, etc... all in the same evening. I picked up a Rock Island VR80 used for a few $ hundred, and it is very AR-like. I was able to drill its gas ports out a bit, so it will shoot anything and everything now. Since it kicks a bit more with the extra gas, I have an AR stock on it with some extra recoil absorption that works very well. I have really tried to stall this thing with low brass and shit ammo, but it just keeps firing and ejecting everything. I have several 10 round stick mags and a few 5 round sticks, and I just picked up a 20 round drum mag. We'll see if that stalls...
