Once upon a time you had Colt Pythons and Winchester Controlled round feed bolt actions, but what are today's top firearms?
All depends on if you’re talking about quality control or a company as a whole and customer service. I know Wilson combat has all three and a top company in todays market in my personal opinion. A lot of company’s are lack luster in quality control.

So does a Wilson Combat 1911 outshine say a S&W E-series 1911? Or is it Wilson Combats AR products that folks consider Top of the line nowadays? Glocks are always lauded as reliable, but are they one of today's Top Firearms?

Never owned a Smith and Wesson e series but as far as quality the Wilson is hand fitted. I have a Les Baer and it’s the best gun I own and the best shooter I have so.

So should we break this into categories? Like Top 1911, Top 9mm, or Top Concealed Carry, Top AR-15, Top AR-10, etc?

The answers to this are subjective. Everyone is going to have a different opinion. What is top to one, will not be to another. The only way to gauge what is tops in any category is for individual(s) to be extremely well-educated and experienced with every firearm in the industry and no one falls into that class. This being the case, there can be no objective viewpoint as the data does not exist. Even with data that does exist on various firearms, most all of it is subjective as it is based on personal opinions/assessments of those familiar with those firearms from handling and firing them.

Now, are there popular sellers in the various platforms? You bet, but brand names of those are all across the board. Are there top brand names? Yes, but it all depends on what someone considers as a top name brand. What basis of comparison does someone have to determine what is tops? Do they have bias for one brand or another? There are too many denominators and unknowns to fully assess what are the top firearms today.

Now if platform affectionadoes all would like to have one, or all would like to try one, like revolver guys and Colt Python's and Bolt Action guys and pre-64 Win Model 70's, that makes them at least iconic which could also be taken as a Top Firearm. JMHO. Being subjective vice definitive is what makes for good conversation. At least it allows folks to describe what they desire in a Top of the line firearm. Some folks are going to place a premium on reliability while others consider 100 percent reliability a starting point for a Top Firearm. How does accuracy factor in? Etc. The 30-30 Lever Action is iconic, but is there one that every lever action fan would like to have or at least try? Then that could be considered a Top Firearm.

Huh, open ended random subjective question with no right answer. Glock 19 any generation, AR15 in pretty much any caliber, Mossberg 500/590 or Remington 870, Savage, Ruger, Remington bolt gun in whatever caliber blows your dress up.

L A SWAT almost singlehandedly started a cult following for the Glock 17L, perhaps that lead to the development of the G34? For a long time Colt had a cult following on 1911's and AR-15's, but I don't know that the following is very strong nowadays?

Colts quality is garbage now. Their CR serial numbers are literally worse than pretty much any budget AR. As to their 1911s, quality is just ok but the prices for them are ridiculously high...

Honestly, there are no new firearms that I’m interested in. All the guns I’m looking for are no longer in production.
I was in a local gun shop the other day and asked where the used guns are. The guy said they sold them all at auction.
I forgot to ask if they are going to build their used stock back up but if all they are going to sell is new guns, there’s no reason to stop in.

I agree with g-rat. Colts quality have went downhill. I had a couple of colt 1911s and gotten rid of them. Now the new pythons and anacondas I like. But tried and true quality of firearms aren’t what they used to be. I’d rather buy an old smith vs a new model smith revolver any day of the week. But people are going to buy what they like and everyone’s opinions vary.

I won’t buy a new Smith with the internal lock. They don’t hafta do that. They caved to Clinton.
I’ve got one of the new Pythons and it’s a good gun. That was the first current production gun I’ve wanted in a long time.

I’ve wanted to get one of the new pythons in 3 inch. I had the anaconda in a 6 but sold it without shooting it as I had some other stuff happen at the time.

All the new Pythons were hard to get at first and prices were mostly north of $2k. A few places online were selling in the $1800 range but sold out quickly.
I figured the 3” would be hard to get for some time but I see them fairly regularly.
Pricing has dropped to the $1400 range.

How do the Dan Wesson's Stack up nowadays?
Good quality depending on which one you get. Had a vigil commander in 9mm with aluminum frame and didn’t care for it. But I love my specialist commander in 45. It’s a sweet shooter. My brother has the commander classic bobtail and it’s one of his go to carry guns
