I'm totally in the dark when it comes to red dot and holographic sights for an AR.

What would be a good optic for a flat top M-4 for around $100 or less?

Do they need to be elevated to see past the standard front sight?

Saw some "Truglo" sights for around a Benji but I'm really ignorant as to what's what.

There are a few different mounting heights, depending on the optic. For an M4 with a front sight, you'll want either an absolute cowitness or a lower 1/3 cowitness mount in order to put the dot in line, or slightly above the front sight post.

I would strongly encourage you to look into the Vortex Strikefire and Sparc red dots. They are great quality for the $$$.

I'm also a really big fan of the 1X Spitfire. It's a prism sight, so it has an etched reticle that can be used without illumination.

Find a used Vortex, that way you can actually get your money back out of it when you upgrade to Aimpoint.

Look through a red dot before buying to make sure you do not have astigmatism, otherwise the dot may look like a bunch of grapes.

I'll put another vote in for the Vortex stuff.
Also looks at Primary Arms. They make some good stuff for a awesome price.

I am going to second this. With a $100 or less budget, Primary Arms is the way to go. I recommend the Classic 30mm optic. The drop down menu allows you to choose a 30mm ring mount. The Primary Arms Absolute Co-Witness 30mm Mount is a $10 add-on. It works pretty well. I first used one of these optics about 10 years ago.

I'm gonna beat a dead horse and say the TSR-25 is a great optic. I have one on my AK and have never had any issues with it, and I abuse my AK pretty well when I have it out. Put about 800 rounds down the barrel without any wandering dot issues so far.

The issue with the TRS-25 and the AR-15 is getting the right mount for it to work. To my knowledge, the only mount is the UTG riser and you have to make sure you get the right height riser. Optics like the Vortex and the Primary Arms Classic is that they either come with a mount or you can add a mount from the drop-down menu when you order. There is no guessing.

Most of us will never be in competition or battle nor do a bunch of us have the disposable income to buy top notch everything when the lower priced items work for us just fine.
