Flyandscuba you are the definition of a moving target. Only a few of these folks were actors or athletes (though I would argue that they have definitely contributed to society) . John Washington Carver was an inventor and a scientist - here is an excerpt about him. "Carver's reputation is based on his research into and promotion of alternative crops to cotton, such as peanuts, soybeans, and sweet potatoes, which also aided nutrition for farm families. He wanted poor farmers to grow alternative crops both as a source of their own food and as a source of other products to improve their quality of life. The most popular of his 44 practical bulletins for farmers contained 105 food recipes using peanuts.[4] He also developed and promoted about 100 products made from peanuts that were useful for the house and farm, including cosmetics, dyes, paints, plastics, gasoline, and nitroglycerin" Thurgood Marshal and Clarence Thomas were/are Supreme Court Justices whose ruling have helped to shape this country. Mrs. Rice held several positions within W.'s administration, the last was Secretary of State. Collin Powell is probably one of the finest examples of an American that I can think of. Obama is controversial but there is no doubt that his presidency has shaped out country. Mandela's actions set an example for the World. You might as well denigrate Ghandi's actions because it only affected India. Last point, this thread is about Baltimore, USA why are you so fixated on Africa?

As I said before - and will say again - they're not Africans... They were Americans of (some) African descent. Why are you fixated upon people?

I know about all of those people - and they aren't from Africa.

Give me ONE invention, creation, discovery from Africa in MODERN day that has contributed (positively) to the world? You can't.

Why am I fixated on Africa? Because it is a shit hole. Every major crime-ridden metropolitan area is also a shit hole. If things continue their current path - NW Florida will become a shit hole like them. There is a common denominator that makes them a shit hole...and it is cultural.

Answer is: The great white flight to the last frontier. Mucho sarcasm,

Yep, come up and get 10 acres near Mt. Sustina for $5K... No lie, you buy it straight from the State of Alaska.

You will need a boat or airplane to access most parcels - as well as an ATV or snow machine (what we call snow mobiles up here). ;)

I don't get the chance to say this often:
    Been there, done that.

Honestly though, couldn't stand the cold. Winters here do a number on my hands that's nearly unbearable. Besides, in actually think moving away from the problem is not the answer.

Baltimore pd needed to deal with this instantly and before it happened. They dropped the ball. But there's more at play than that. *conspiracy theory warning*Others have stated before in this thread: much like ferguson, I doubt the people behind this live in that city.

Not much violent in that arrest record and mostly all drug offenses. Only one count of 2nd degree assault and who knows the real story behind that. The police trump up charges like that all the time on people who talk back. Looks like the classic case of a non-violent drug offender being caught up in the system. A perfect example of the unequal justice system Rand Paul has talked about. He was a human being whose life was as worth as much as any other. How anyone who claims to be Christian and says otherwise I don't understand. Saying he was a turd who's toilet was flushed is a highly offensive statement. He was murdered and his family deserves justice.

That said it in no way justifies the rioting tonight and I don't believe the majority of the thugs doing it give 2 shits about Freddy Gray. As Sheriff Clark stated they would just as soon shoot him for bumping into them in a nightclub. They are taunting the police and getting away with it which is going to be bad for the whole community moving forward. The thugs of Baltimore will leave tonight feeling more emboldened to wreak havoc thinking there will be no serious consequences for bad behavior. The decision to not engage has put every officer in more danger moving forward.

I don't have cable or so to keep tabs on the news late at night, just my smartphone, social media, etc. I saw something about a half an hour ago saying things were dying down. Then this popped up..unfortunately I guess not. Talk about a long night for Baltimore, Lord.

The only "justice" the family will want - is a check from the city's law enforcement liability insurance carrier...or the city if the self-insured. I've seen it numerous times when "momma's angel" died in police custody.

Tired of all the wimps making excuses for the criminals and allowing the rioting and looting..the City should have had open season instead of standing there. Ever city run by blacks is the same, crime, drugs, corruption..Detroit, Chicago, Oakland...on and on and on

Fly you logic eludes me. According to you Baltimore is a problem because of the culture. You compare Baltimore's culture to the culture in Africa (which has so many unique cultures that you really should be more specific). You state that Africa has not contributed anything to society so somehow this relates to the riots in Baltimore. I just do see it. I do see the analogy and I don't see the connection. Comparing the citizens of Baltimore to the citizen of countries in Africa is illogical. They have only the most superficial resemblance. Culturally, linguistically, socially they are different from each other.

Here are a few African inventors Rachid Yazami (1953-), a Moroccan and French Scientist, the inventor of lithium ion batteries used in portable phones, PC, I-pads, ..

.Chinua Achebe, a Nigerian novelist, poet, professor and critic. Author of highest selling book in modern African literature, Things Fall Apart. He is often referred to as the father of modern African literature.

Arthur Zang, a Cameroonian Engineer has pioneered the first Medical tablet PC of Africa that would enable cardiovascular examinations to be performed remotely and transmit the results to the surgoens. With only 30 surgeons in the major cities of Yaounde and Douala this innovation save patients the hassle of having to travel to the major cities from other Cameroonian cities.

Dr. SIMO, Ernest, a distinguished Cameroonian scientist was a Finalist to NASA astronauts’ selection process in 1994 and 1996. In 1994, His co-finalists included space Heroes Rick Husband and William McCool who were respectively Commander and Pilot of the Space shuttle Columbia which was tragically lost in Feb-2003

Kwatsi Alibaruho, a Ugandan-American Flight Director at NASA.

Michael Elmore-Meegan,Public Health Researcher,Pioneered use of low cost technologies in Primary Health Care in East Africa, widely published in International Health and Clinical Epidemiology.

    .
Haile Debas (b. 1937), an Eritrean who achieved national recognition as a gastrointestinal investigator and made original contributions to the physiology, biochemistry, and pathophysiology of gastrointestinal peptide hormones.

Douglas Osei-Hyiaman (b. 1964), a Ghanaian-American endocrinologist and geneticist who was the first to establish a role for endocannabinoids in fatty acid synthesis and oxidation in the pathobiology of liver disease, obesity, and diabetes.

Kofi Annan was the Secretary General of the UN for two terms.

BTW I focus on people because people make a difference.

I forgot to add Rock and Roll, Motown, Jaz, Folk, and Gospel to the contributions that blacks have made to modern culture.

How about Medal of winner just from Vietnam - 25 blacks were awarded this medal from this war alone. Nine of them threw themselves on a grenade three others died protecting wounded comrades.

I agree they shouldn't allow rioting and looting and the decision to sit back was horrible. There are a lot of violent thugs out there tonight who belong behind bars for the betterment of society. Based off that rap sheet Freddy Gray wasn't one of them.

All druggies are not violent and it should be treated as a health crisis not a criminal one. Some countries have went this direction and had great success. They have proven it's cheaper to treat and manage the addition or habit versus incarceration. It also reduces crime. Sorry if that doesn't fit the stereotypical conservative talking points but facts are facts.

These problems are not unique to black run cities, they are not even unique to American run cities. In fact the cities you list as an example were corrupt long before blacks even were allowed to hold political office. Seriously, Chicago? Was there ever a time when Chicago was not corrupt?

Find one that ISN'T a shit hole... Can't do it. Even in the southeast - Memphis, Birmingham, Atlanta - you've got to move to the suburbs, away from the "hood" in order to have a nice place to live in a reasonable amount of safety.

Tuskeegee remains the one town that Walmart pulled out of - simply due to the never ending theft from employees and customers alike.

He wasn't a drug abuser - he was a drug DEALER... He made a conscious choice - no one forced him to sell that shit.

Maybe, maybe not. Most all users get charged with dealing at some point. Doesn't take much. Someone growing one plant is charged with felony manufacturing with intent to distribute. The whole war on drugs has been a complete and colossal failure on every front. Legalize it and treat it as a health crisis and you cut crime rates and incarceration rates in half. Then we have more resources to focus on the real violent criminals. It's not a position I've come to lightly but through personal experiences and just an honest examination of the facts while trying to put aside preconceived biases and prejudices.

I realize there are different schools of thought on this and I respect that but after 40 years of failure I would think folks might be willing to give the other way a try.
