A hunting buddy and I were sitting in the bed of my pick-up, glassing a winter wheat field for deer, using binos, and then zooming in with my new 15-45X60 Riton spotter. We didn't see any deer, but we did have about 500 Honkers drop in for a snack. That quickly changed our morning plans from rifles to shotguns. 90 min after sunrise, we had already taken 4 puddle ducks, and we could hear the geese lifting off their roosting pond. At about the same time, 3 coyotes came out of the woods and stood 300 yards away in the field. So much for the geese landing. After scaring them away, the geese decided to land 400+ yards from where we were. Oh well, it's still exciting watching and listening to them. Next time, I will be hauling a 5.56 with me and maybe even my deer rifle! I'm going to give the goose chasing another go tomorrow; bringing the dog this time; nothing worse than chasing a wounded goose across a wheat field!
