I'm late to the game on AKs and now that imI'ready to get into it , these bad boys are 850.00 + I noticed a older beat up one going for 999 in my local gun shop and most others in the area are the same i dont understand . About two years ago I was told they were about as cheap as Mosins or at least were in a 600 ball park area

I think AK's were were always underpriced compared to other firearms.
To make an AR be a piston driven side charger chambered in a short 30 caliber wide projectile and make it run reliably takes work and money, when you could just buy an AK (or SKS) and already have all that. That's why. People figured it out

Buffer weight, firing pin and most importantly the mags on the AR is the stumbling block. X39

Not to mention import restrictions from Russia.

Not to mention beginning with China in 1989. So Russia and China are out and the Cugir factory got scaled back dramatically by Covid. Barrel restrictions screwed up parts kits and military orders will always sideline civilian availability especially with Arsenal Bulgaria. Add to that the most anti-gun administration and Congress in years, you have a problem. FWIW.

I remember when they were 350 and couldn't give them away. Now a basic WASR is a grand new.

Keep an eye on PSA. They had a blem sale for 699 last week. A nice one starts at 8-850 from them. Wish I would have bought a couple years ago myself. I'm in deep. If I don't sell now I'll be stick with them, but I bought to keep, while I could find one.

Every time I even think about getting rid of one of my cheapies from the 90s (don’t even have bayo lugs or threaded barrels) I just laugh at myself in Cyrillic and go shoot em. There ain’t a thing inaccurate about an AK inside 300 yards.

Whatever happened to Russia making AK's in America and dropping the prices by flooding the market?

I don’t remember this ever being a thing. Most American made AKs in the past have been pretty crappy, many of them hand grenades.

Yeah Russia was supposed to move a factory over here to get around the import restrictions
