This here is a wonderous rifle to hold and reflect on, it is B-E-U-Tiful, cal is a rare 25 W.C.F. , 1/2 oct barrel and all the checkering (Factory) and with the add on sights (factory) it had to belong to a lucky man back in the day. My friend is kind of wanting to sell it but can't get a real number on it, years ago it was appraised at around 10-12,000 but that could have been for insurance purposes. Really looking for a person who could offer more insight as to real value, without a lowball want to buy price, most gun shops throw out there. Sure is nice to look at, wish I could put it on my wall, ammo is probally as scarce as hens teeth.

    Found this on it.

Your Model 1885 Single Shot rifle was chambered for the 25-20 Single Shot (25-20 S.S.) cartridge, and it is factory original. It is a long-winded story concerning why the early production rifles chambered for the 25-20 S.S. were marked "25 W.C.F.", but nonetheless, it is a fact. Winchester manufactured approximately 7,100 Model 1885s in this cartridge between 1886 - 1893 (when the 25-20 W.C.F. Repeater cartridge was first introduced for the Model 1892). You are not the first person to have been fooled into thinking that you bought a Model 1885 chambered for the 25-20 W.C.F. cartridge.

The good news, is that the 25-20 S.S. is an inherently more accurate cartridge than the 25-20 W.C.F. The bad news, is that it has been obselete since about 1930. Today, it is purely a reloader's cartridge.

    Sound right??

Purrdy !!! I once bought a couple of 1873 Winchesters from a lady that said they've "been in the closet for 50 years and just wanted them out of the house". One was a saddle ring carbine in 44-40, the other an older octagon barrel in 38-40. I paid $30 a piece for them, sold one for $750, traded the other for an excellent+ condition M-1 carbine.

And no, I felt no guilt, she tried to have them destroyed.
