Gotta say I have really enjoyed taking this trip with you through pictures the past few weeks. Thank you for taking the time to share with us.
Yall are welcome. Most of the time its run of the mill stuff. No deadliest catch action here. Get to see alot of ships and water. Northern lights in the winter, mops, brooms and hoses. Keeping the boat clean and picked up. My job is pretty much adult day care.

In all honesty I’m Envious Of you and your, I will say adventures. I know it’s a job and it’s hard work but you do get so see some truly beautiful places. I’ve always wanted to see the Northern Lights in the winter. One of the more beautiful things our Great Creator has given us to enjoy.

I got a question, how many men does it take to keep up with a ship that size. How long are yall out before a break. The pics are great , please keep them coming.

And, I think your shooting house takes you out of bow range. It must require oxygen at that altitude.

Paid at the end of the month. As far as money goes I work 7 months or so a year.. and lack for nothing. Direct deposit, airfare and cabs, hotel and per diem.
Blue cross. Life insurance. No emt/doctor. Duct tape. +6 weeks paid vacation. Collect unemployment from NYC during layup in the winter till spring. 10% safety bonus each quarter on money earned. Anything over 8 a day is ot. Work +8 everyday. Its a damm good job just keeps me away from my bride too long!

View from the bridge and more paint chipping! Main Deck is painted white to help keep the boat from flexing as much when its hot.
Ive never really been around large ships like that so looking at the first picture and seeing that guy on the deck puts into perspective of just how big that ship is. It’s quite amazing.

1st pic, anchor windlass. Used to drop/retrieve the anchor. 175 hp motor I believe.
2nd pic, tow lines, or used to really, really secure the boat. Provide an excellent workout for free.
3rd pic, drop down shuttles to load the boat boom can be moved to drop cargo port/starboard to load the boat evenly.
4th pic, Plasma line, lightweight for the bow and stern. No stretch, sounds like a rifle when it breaks. 2 600 foot spools = $9,000.00 bucks.
5th pic, 480 volt breaker for the windlass, don't know why that one got in there.
6th pic, Another pic of the loading boom. Have to watch cargo going in vs ballast water coming out so you don't smash up the deck equipment.
7th pic, What happens when officers touch the winch controls. We call them birds nests. About +45 mins to rewind dragging 1 inch steel cable up the deck for 300-400 feet. Rewound under tension. This is very dangerous to personal and equipment. It can dig in and bind or payout becomes retrieve.

Headed into locks, st marys river then mackinaw and lake Michigan. Headed to Indiana harbor.

You need to put one of those winches on your golf /hunting cart. Would likely pull the skin right off a hog!
Great pics! When you coming home? How long do you stay out?

RR. for the non-ship wise explain the difference between "line" and rope on a larger ship?

Is a "cleat" on the dock or on the bottom of baseball shoes ??
Did the Edmund Fitsgerald really haul 26,000 tons more, than it weighed empty ?? --- SAWMAN
