Just visited this area last week, Cairo IL. isn't even a shadow of what it was 50+ years ago. For scenic history I'd take Old 37 to Cairo and skip I57 all together. But it's going to take a bit longer.... Needed a route with nothing more than foothills from the Great Lakes to & from Florida to easy the spouses irrational fears. A bonafide Courier des bois.

ugh! the boat is covered with these nasty mayflies. Makes it dangerous to walk up the deck. probably have to get the hoses out tomm and rinse the boat.
Remember when we anchored off of Chicago on a still august day waiting to go in to the 87th street US Steel plant (Close down yrs ago) on the south side. Regular house flies got all over the place. I guess the breeze took them out over water and that boat was the nearest thing they could see to land on.

Lifeboat. 40 passenger according to the coast guard, lol. Powered by oars. Old school. I actually had to goto school to be certified for lifeboat and life raft. Use, maintenance and deployment. Spent the morning at the fuel dock. Took on 70,000 gallons. DFM. Also sent the mail with the mailboat after leaving the fuel dock. JW Wescott. One of the very few water routes left in the US. Underway replenishment of supplies and sometimes personel. No pics as I was too busy, next time.

OK, HERES WHAT YOU DO NEXT.
Nudge that boat into the bank that looks promising.
Get you a cammo shooting house and set up on the bow.
We want to see the rifle sticking out the window.
It'll make you feel like you're at home.
