I am by NO means a wood worker, or refinish professional by any means... with that being said....

I was never a BIG fan of the stock on my M1, it just seemed "to nice and shiny" if you know what I mean... some of you may recognize the rifle, since I bought it off a member here.

As the rifle is today (Bottom in the picture)

New stock that arrived today (Middle in the picture)

Old musket from the 1600's (Top in the picture)

Now, I want to keep the M1 as period correct as I can. what type of oil (tung) should put on it as to not make the stock to dark? As it showed up here it only has a brown stain on the wood..

    suggestions?

Boiled linseed oil or mineral oil. The BLO will actually cure and dry after a few weeks. The mineral oil will just soak in and keep the wood from dry cracking.

Boiled linseed oil and pine tar mixed 50/50. Bake it in with a heat gun. Weather sealed for a long time and a beautiful non glossy finish that will look weathered
I use a 1/3 ratio of BLO, pine tar and real turpentine to make tar hemp rope. It does make make a darker finish on wood, but will last forever.

Amazon... this is the brand you want. Pure pine tar. You can buy some from tractor supply as it is used for healing horse hooves, but it is already cut and im not sure with what.

This was a before photo on the axe handles. 15 minutes per handle. Rub it on... add heat from a heat gun.... keep adding the mix and heat until the bubbles stop. That means the poors have sucked in the mix as much as it can.

thanks, I think I'll go with the pine tar ans linseed oil route. That should give me the look I'm looking for. Thanks.
