100% safety first. Get professional training. As Col. Cooper said, "Treat every weapon as if it were loaded. Keep your finger straight and off the trigger until you're ready to fire. Never point a weapon at anything you do not intend to shoot. Be sure of your target and what is in front and behind it."

After the safety rules, read or watch videos concerning the use and function of the firearm you will be shooting. Become familiar with all functions and operations of the firearm. How to safely load and unload, cycle the action, all the safety features and how they operate. The NRA used to have a program, maybe they still do, where if you bought a new firearm you could find a mentor near you who could give instruction on that particular firearm. I can't believe the number of people I see at the range that have no idea how their firearm operates.

Safety , buy once cry once but practice with a quality weapon and instruction does more good than cool stuff.

Since everyone has hit on safety I'll take a different route. Set yourself a budget and pretend to stick to it.

Gee I'm glad to see that many others beat me to it. Get QUALITY instruction. (That of course includes a robust safety component.)

    After safety...

Don't worry too much at first about your abilities... don't worry or compare yourself to others' skills or abilities. Don't be intimidated by range bros or tacti-cool tards.

Enjoy shooting for what it is... skills will come in time with practice.

What BH6 said. Ego is a training killer whether it's shooting, golf, baseball, fighting, whatever. Separating your ego from your performance is one of the best things you can ever do.
