Well, I'm on a farm and I have 1911 in .45 and an AR and a M1A and several SG, but I have .22 conversions for the 1911 and the AR and I use them almost exclusively. I know one thing for a fact: NOBODY WANTS TO GET SHOT, WITH ANYTHING. I guarantee that .22HP will ruin anyone's day. As said, several rounds up around the head will take care of 99% of anything. I have yet to come across anything that didn't want to get shot. I regularly drop 150lb goats with a single shot to the back of the head. I've seen a .22 drop a 900lb bull the same way. I know they work.

After saying all that, it depends......if it's at night and I'm surprised from my sleep, etc, I'll grab the SG; if I have time during the day and know what it is, I'll grab a .22,,,,if it's a wild hog or bear, I'll grab the M1A, but I have NO problem using .22, most of the time.

AFA scenarios, well, nobody knows how any encounter will pan out. They're all different. OP said that invaders fled when they realized he was home, so that's all it took then. We've seen many cases where just the sight of a gun DID stop the confrontation, so don't tell me that it doesn't work. We just don't know,,,sure, we could be confronted with a hardened felon on PCP, that keeps coming after several .45 rnds, but that's very very rare( and then it becomes about how good your HTH and conditioning is). We've seen many cases where folks shoot and empty their gun and don't hit the BG once, because of stress, so it really didn't matter what caliber or how many rnds it was. So imo, nobody has the secret to armed confrontation success.

Nobody? Tell that to someone that has not watch Rambo, Dirty Harry, of other fictional Hollywood characters in action.

If I have to pull my gun im NOT going to intimdate or wound..been with the EMS services as a volunteer firefighter/emergency medical responder,most of which was in Jacksonville,Fla, and saw the aftereffects of that. If I HAVE to draw my weapon or grab it out of the bedside safe its going to be to protect my life or someone elses. Simply put just send a toetag and a body bag thats all that will be needed. I NEVER hope I have to use my firearms in self defense but if I do they won't be bothering anyone else. EVER. the night those teens broke in could have had a different ending you were lucky.

Lucky? Absolutely. I took it as a wake up call. Thing is, despite being a person that sees the negative future coming, I have real hope because I am a born-again Christian. I pair what I see with what the Holy Bible tells us to expect. I don't relish being pushed in.to that future, but once I am engaged or die, I keep hope for my personal outcome. Most people who think in such terms focus instead on disengaging themselves and going it alone. That's almost a sure sign of defeat coming your way.

I am thinking you will not be able to hold it or be killed trying, the Government will take it all or what if I need the fuel you have because the gold you are offering will not burn in my trucks. Over history precious metals have been forbidden by the masses to use. Sure there will be a black market but real necessities will be need far more. Most people will not survive a year into a total collapse, the gangs and brutal people will take whatever you have.

The surest way to bring a government down is for it to fail to discharge its duties in a way that not only preserves but extends the economy. A new government needs people's good will and trust to succeed, so it is the faltering government that gets aggressive against its people, not the new one. First survive the old one, then stretch your might under the new one would be my approach. Think of what it was like when people used to solitude encountered each other across this great nation. Did you shoot first or cradle your rifle in the crook of your arm and raise the right hand in a show of peace? You have to get back to the point of realizing that the other person has their own fears and concerns to deal with as well, and you both do better with no shots fired than having one or both of you shot and possibly dying.

Well, I don't know what that means exactly, but if you can predict how any armed encounter will pan out, you'll be the first in history. Btw, what exactly is this thread about? You start out with how .22 is a viable SD round and now want to talk about survival "scenarios"....
Btw, I went in the Marine Corps at 17( 1976), for 8 yrs and was in the L.A. riots in the mid 80's and went to NOLA right after Katrina and saw how those folks survived (or not).

The govt didn't go after everyone's supplies. Sure there were pockets of "roving gangs", but not massively. Alot of of folks survived by banding together as a group. AFA Gold, sure , I'll trade all day long for Gold and Silver, not because I can use it right now, but because one day the economy will be restored and it will be worth something. AFA bartering, again, nobody knows what anything will be worth. Values will depend on what anyone needs and how bad they need it. I doubt very much that there'll be groups of gangs taking everything nor the govt taking everything , either.

The Government is already failing to discharge its duties and those obliged to it are like sheep voting for a socialist to care for them. If you are afraid or hesitant to shoot, YOU will be the one dead. Be prepared, train and kill them before they kill you, if you go down, go down in a Patriotic meaningful way!

Threads go the way responders direct. The question was raised, is 22LR enough firepower? Depends on things that cannot be foretold, so everybody expresses an opinion. That shapes a thread's direction. As to what the government is going to do, let me add this: Homeland Security has ordered new supplies of 620 million rounds of hollow point ammo and more tanks. That suggests something to some people. The government has already conducted some drills in major metropolitan areas where the military come is and takes you out without a warrant, then can hold you indefinately without charges being filed against you. They now have a law on the books that permits this. The government has set the new standard for the use of drone weapons to strike at Americans on home soil, not just overseas. All this on some bureaucrat's determination that you pose a terrorist risk, which anyone in fighting for his or her freedom can be classified as being.

But on another subject, I bought a nice red dot laser off eBay for exactly $12.98 with free shipping. You are not going to find ammo online that is so cheap, because shipping is by weight and ammo turns out to be hefty. If you can hold out and just buy it locally when it becomes available, you should save some money.
