So there have been a lot of Mosin sales going around lately - even the guys at Ranger still have quite a few left.
Some quick Google searches have given me some info on the Round versus Hex receivers but I was curious what the GCGF folks thought. I've got a little interest in getting one. Ammo seems pretty cheap but it's also another 'project' i could reload for....

Anyone care to tackle the subject? What is the significance between the round and hex receivers?
Is it simply the age or the rarity that makes the Hex more desirable?

I have a 1943 round receiver. It will still go bang. Surplus ammo is cheap. That metal butt plate will slam you good though.

The Hex receivers are older than the rounded ones. The rounded receiver is stronger, but it isn't like you have to worry about a hex receiver blowing up on you or anything ridiculous like that. Most places charge a bit more for a hex receiver since they are a little more rare, but it isn't uncommon by any means.

Common belief is that since the hex receivers are all "pre-war WW2", the Russians had more time and effort to spend on them for fit and finish. Many wartime 91/30s look very rough and unfinished on their exterior metal work, but the interior chamber and bore is what mattered and they did fine of these areas. The hex lettering and barrel shank stamps are more attractive and even. With so much history, you should really have at least one. Ballistics are between a 30-06 and 308.
