i know a few guys that will shoot into their pool to get a boolit thats not mangled to take measurements or whatever. i was wondering if i could shoot into a barrel since i dont have a pool and my friends that do wont let me shoot in thiers. i think a 30 gallon barrel would be ok but not sure. anybody ever done it?

I'm not sure about shooting into a barrel, but why not fill up several milk jugs with water and shoot them. Stick a 2x8 or 2x10 underneath them and on the sides and you should be able to recover the bullet.

I would imagine it would work just fine. 30" of water will stop pretty much any round up to .30 cal. May be a rather moist endeavor though. Out of curiosity what would you measure that couldn't be done with a casting ?

I'm guessing he would like to measure expended diameter and weight retention.

Water isn't going to give very good results for that. Ballistic gel is fairly inexpensive and can be molded in a cardboard box lined with plastic.

Well i prob dont need any measurements i couldnt get from casting. I just started casting and loading though so i measure all kinds of stuff i dont need to just to learn any little thing i can. It just seemed cool too. And i have a bunch of barrels that need a purpose. Ill set it up and let yall know.

Let us know after you do it. I always want to retrieve my cast boolits to see if they're engraving right and filling the voids but....I've been too much of a chicken to shoot into a barrel and my brother won't let me shoot into his pool either:becky:
