So I thought being a newbe I would get a jump on a few things while waitin on the press to get here. Wow its skinny over here in FWB. Went to Ranger , Jimmys etc.
I found Very little one thing that I dont understand is what type of powder to by. Is there some type of equation one should know for proper powder selection? What is the S.O.P. here?

What round you are loading is the factor for what powder you need. Some of the most common is Win 748 for 223 and 308, Win 231 for most non-magnum pistols and I use Bluedot, WC820 and Win 296 in magnum pistols.

Check your loading manuals for other powders, those are by no means the lot. Let us know what caliber you're loading and we can help narrow down the field.

    Here's some of my powders:

    5.56: Win 748, WC 844, WC 846
7.62: IMR 4064 for accuracy, WC 844 for plinking
US 30 Cal: IMR4064 for accuracy, IMR 4895 for plinking
    30 Carbine: WC820
    9mm, 40 S&W, 45ACP, 380ACP: Win 231, AA#5
    357mag, 44mag, Win 296, WC820, Bluedot

The powder and bullet you use depends on your firearm, not on your preference. Every gun likes something a little different from the one produced just before. I have acquired a mass of different powders testing which gives what rifle the best groups. I've settled on IMR 4064 as the best 30 cal accuracy powder, 748 works great for 5.56. Your hardware may like something entirely different. Only testing will show which.

This is of course if you're looking for accuracy, if you just want to plink then just about any powder listed in the manual for said caliber will do the job.

For .243, I can use Reloader 19, H414, IMR 4831. The same powders work in 25.06 as well.
