Brand new portable deal key operated. It's 12x12 probably.
It's 15 years old and never been opened until today.
Was the factory hot or was it raining the day it was assembled?
The literature that's in it was soggy feeling and it's molded.

Did it seal the air in that well, or does it not seal well at all?

I would guess it doesn’t seal that well.
Working around water all my life, you start to realize that most things that claim to seal,
    Simply Don’t!

Neighbors say they open theirs about once a month to air out. Idk. I feel like I'd forget or it would be buried and too lazy to dig it out. Lol.

some paper safes use a liner that releases moisture to protect the contents in a fire. Over a period of time they will start to sweat so to speak without the introduction of outside air. I remember Meilink I think it was used to recommend leaving them open for periods of time to combat this issue.

I don't think most safes are air tight. I believe the moisture in the safe can be attributed to fluctuations in temperature. If the temperature in the safe is warmer than the outside air, it is sort of like a cold drink container on a warm day. Moisture will condense in the warm inside, though gradually. Paper is especially attractive to the moisture as well as any "dry" metal. A dehumidifier is your best bet if you don't open the safe often. IMHO.
