Nice job! I have tinkered a little bit with the Brownell's alumahyde on a couple of guns, but not ventured into any kind of patterns. That looks good..

mag looks good you should do the AK to match that would be cool, maybe even throw that pattern on a scope if you have it mounted..

That is good, that was the look I wanted when I did my 1911 and 1100 combo but ended up with another style pattern and was somewhat dissapointed.

Can you give us a brief walk through of what you did to achieve that? I just ordered some duracoat and have a colt that I am going to experiment on...

    Ahhh... Ancient Chinese secret.

    Just kidding.

I dismantled the magazine, prepped the surfaces then sprayed it with rust oleum camouflage Army green for the base coat.

Popped it in the wifes easy bake oven for a few, then took it out juggled it a bit as it burned the crap outta my fingers
(just kidding)- 150-175 for about 10 min.

Then I tore strips of painters tape into suitable patterns and laid em on the mag; then sprayed the darker green.

Then I hit it with a hair dryer (not literally) on high heat for a few to take the tack off and to harden it up.

After that I tore smaller strips and laid em over the dark green and sprayed it with Rust oleum khaki.

Used the hair dryer again and let it cool. Then I carefully removed the tape, slapped her up in the WASR and gave myself a high five.

I just wish it was a higher end product and process. I'm really pleased with it and it looks great even up close. I may hit it with a satin clear to seal it up.

It's all in the prep work and envisioning the striping. If you try and fail, try again. If you get discouraged and give up, give me a shout. I like doing this kind of stuff and would be glad to help you (I won't help you pay for paint or tape, though!)

Curious...I'm contemplating doing this for a little side money. Any of you guys think $7-$10 per paint job be asking too much?

Thanks, when my duracoat gets here I will post the results of my tiger striped 1911!

Not sure on your pricing, are you talking 7-10 for one mag?

Yeah- I thought it might be high for a rattle can job. Don't know if $5 would be worth my time. Maybe for a minimal stripe job, though.

Hey..When you tear the tape, stick it to the table and rip each side off. If you move your hand as you tear it gives a nice jagged edge. Then use what's left as the stencil.

You'd have to do full guns IMO to make it worthwhile. Thanks for the tips, I have thought about a digi camo pattern too, not sure though.

Duracoat is fun to mess with. I learned 2 things right off tho.

    1) air compressors REQUIRE an oil/water seperator and an inline filter !! its a bitch to remove the paint when it gets a water spot in it. I use compressed Nitrogen and a regulator now.
    2) about the time you think the surface is clean and degreased youre about halfway there. Laquer thinner works great for that.

Cheaper than 5 bucks per job? Well scratch that idea, then! Guess it'll just become a hobby.
