The Cow Killer monicker comes from a cow purportedly laying on one in a pasture and being stung on the bag. As the story goes the cow if stung on the bag, will run itself to death, from the pain caused by the sting. A sting's pain builds and builds, unlike a bee, it does not just occour and go away. If you have ever been around cattle you learn quickly that a cow when popped with pain, will run, run and run.
