I picked up one of these today, I figured that it was decent price on by most accounts a good gun. I've never gotten in to the 1911 thing, and finally decided to give it a shot.

Well let me tell ya, I'm in love...I have no idea why I never jumped on this boat before. Couple little things I wanna do (ie upgrade magazines, get some different grips, etc.), but overall a great gun...

Don't be surprised if I'm on the hunt soon for another one!

Bfisher had some 47Ds for sale at a great price, not sure if he still does.

1911junky can do you a good trigger job.

That should be about all you need to get you shooting reliably and with some accuracy.

It's shooting pretty good, I put about 50 rounds through it just playing...and damn...I think I'm gonna put my glock 22 up for trade on another. You were right though Dan, you were right.

I'll check on those too...isn't junky doing work out of Docs shop?

    Yes, he sure is.
Even an entry level 1911 has a better trigger than the polymer wonders, believe it or not, they get much, much better than that, if you can imagine that at this point. It's a very fun and rewarding journey you're embarking on.

One more thing, look up "idiot scratch" and don't do it. Oh, and never drop the slide on an empty chamber.

Congrats on a new pistol. My first 1911 was my learning pistol. I learned to disassemble and reassemble the 1911 with it. I never used any power tools to make mine function better. I never attempted anything major either. Just drop in parts that required a little fitting. Good luck with yours. It truly is an amazing pistol.

Oh btw - look out for the 1911 snobs that talk trash about 1911s if it's not a Dan Wesson or Wilson Combat ($2-3K pistols).

I can't watch a man do that motion more than a few times. Makes me feel dirty.

Either way, I don't do it with my 1911s and don't recommend anyone do it with theirs, but to each his own.

I don't do it repeatedly on purpose but it does not bother me if I do it once or twice during a function check or at the range.

I won't freak out if a friend does it ignorantly, and I prefer the caps for function check. It's just not something to make a habit of.

I paid a lot of money for my triggers to be the way they are, and my guns to work the way they do, while a few times won't hurt much, I don't make a habit of it, or recommend it be done just for fun.

Worse is dropping the slide on a loaded chamber or snap caps. 1911 extractors are designed for the rim to come up from the magazine under and behind the extractor, not to be jammed over the rim.

Never even heard of a warning about dropping the slide on an empty chamber before this thread.

    Absolutely right. Great tip.
