Searching for a little advice/experience/opinion. The stock grip panels on my 1911 S&W E-Series are awful purdy, but they are a mite thick and don't have any relief allowing me easier access to the mag release. Contemplating Guuun 1911 G-10 grip panels either Thin or Standard so I'd like some input on either of these or other better options? Why other options are better would be appreciated also. Thanks Y'all.

Use a couple pieces of aluminum and secure them with black rubber nonslip tape, available for $2 in any plumbing aisle. Better than any Hogue slip-on grip, $100 cheaper and you get the slim fit you need

I've heard a few Ludacris responses in the past, but just how do you expect a piece of store-bought hand carved aluminum to allow better access to the magazine release. Come on Raven I expected a lot more than this out of you. I could wrap it with paracord and make it a better example than aluminum. Neither of which are standard expectations for something that may have to defend your life. Those are emergency situations at best and triple p planning.JMHO.

How slim do you need? Eliminate the grips altogether, and it doesn't get any more slim than that. Just because you don't have the skills necessary to make it look good, doesn't mean somebody else don't. If it's stupid but works, then it's not stupid

I've used 1911's since the 60's. Hope the photos can show what works for my small hands. The grip panels on the S&W are thicker and allow less thumb Access to the mag release button than any of the others.

So it might not be that easy to see, but the 8th of an inch difference between the rubberized versions of the grip and the full quarter inch plus thickness of the Smith & Wesson e series makes just enough difference for me to get my thumb on the magazine release without having to roll the pistol in my hand.Just a wee bit short.

In case you're wondering about the photo. Top row starting at the left Taurus 1911, Kimber 1911, bottom row left AMT 1911, and finally S&W E-Series 1911. There have been many others that was just what was close at hand when I began.

Maybe get an extended mag release?

That could be one solution. But since the wooden grips are so pretty and I don't want them to show wear and tear if I start to carry it, one of those g10 Guuun grip panels for less than 30$ each might be a better choice? Not as pretty but they should wear longer.

Ive had G10 on a 1911 before and liked it. I personally would do both the new grips and extended mag release. And I have good decent size large hands. I just like being able to get to my mag release fast

Think I'll get both the standard and slim Guuun G10 grips. I'll try the standard with the big scoop since it won't require different sleeves or screws. If it doesn't solve the problem I'll need to order screws, sleeves, and a sleeve removal tool to install the slim big scoop panels. Just have to try and see what either of the new panels do for accessing the ambidextrous safety with the left thumb when shooting with the Offhand. (Left handed) The thick wood of the S&W panels don't leave much room for error.

For those that have changed the grip panels on their 1911's, what Make & Manufacturer did you finally end up with?

For custom wood grips, I really really liked my Kimber USMC rosewood grips (with an Eagle Globe and Anchor engraved) on my nickel and gold plated surplus Colt. Kimber engraved other services seals, too. Good luck finding a set of those, banned for life, any service branded grips. Unfortunately they got sold with the Colt about 10 years ago, back when they were still available on the shelf. I want this gun back, if anybody knows where it is. It was sold in north Pensacola. I still remember the serial number.

I don't currently own a 1911, but I did retain a small collection of hard to find grips for when I do find one in particular I want. I still have a tri-color woodland wraparound rubber grip, and a nice Hogue simulated ivory USMC set (many thanks to @Rebel_Rider1969 )

Yeah if you got money to burn I'd jump on those aviator grips. If nothing else, they'll be a great investment and beat the stock market
Only trouble is that there are so many things available to hang on the wall and look at, and so little $$$$$ to do it with. LOL.
But back to choices at hand:

What about the Craig Spiegel or Chip McCormick slim grips I mentioned in my first post here?

All the slim grips require short bushings and short screws which means that I have change the original standard bushings and screws. First step first, I'll try a standard grip with the big scoop. If that gives me enough clearance to get to the magazine release I won't need to change to short bushings and short screws. This would allow me to put back the wooden grips anytime I desired. Or any pair of standard fancy Dan grips that I may want for looks.

Glock 21SF which has an ambidextrous magazine release by the way, for a little comparison :
