H&K has lived on the legend of the MP-5 for a very long time. Don't know its current status but in the late 90s their customer service was a joke.
They sold the USP pistols to agencies with an aluminum framed prototype. Parts were impossible to get and early problems were many.
The UMP replacement for the MP-5 that Customs and Border Patrol bought in 40 S&W had barrel problems after 5000 rounds and were eventually dumped.

I have first-hand experience with those Border Patrol UMP’s. The issued ammo was pretty spicy. It was a 155 grain JHP going 1250fps out of the 96D Berettas so I can only imagine what it was getting out of the UMP’s longer barrel.

My problem was during long-ish burst fire the stock would flex, sending your group horizontally across the target. The structure probably could have supported a 9mm platform, but the .40 loaded properly has a hard recoil impulse. I never was a UMP armorer, so I can’t speak to their longevity.

    Behind enemy lines!
While I wouldn’t pass up a good deal on a USP, I believe the quality race as it relates to German-specific manufacturers is probably currently being led by Walther and their product line.

IMO the last great firearm they designed was the USP. I'm not saying they make bad guns, but they've been riding on their name for too long and it shows.

I still think the MP5 is the best subgun ever, though. :)
I can't think of a better-looking one, for sure! I carried two of them for a long time, and really liked them. The triggers aren't great by modern standards but the MP5 design is older than most people think.
