Handful of years ago we were heading home from fishing. Left Nichols launch and had 1 cross the road on us on Robinson point. Maybe 50 yards in front of the truck. Pretty cat. Supposedly no such thing as a black panther as they do not have the melanistic trait to be black. They only come in tan color. The blackish ones are jaugarundi. Smaller cats. Were relocated to Florida n Alabama many years ago.

I camped on the Shoal River and the Yellow River with my Dad in the mid 60's and early 70's. Sitting by a big campfire between checking trotlines for Catfish at both , I heard noises from about 50-75 yards away tjat I did not want to know what made them.

Beside Panthers in Florida, one of My biggest fears was from the Lore of the "One eyed Euchee Indian" that was said to roam the area of Camp Euchee, Boy Scout Camp, in DeFuniak Springs. Story was at least once during every Summer Camp Session, the One Eyed Euchee Indian would pull a scout out of his.tent and scalp him. :(

The one I saw in iirc 83 was a darker sandy color that loped across the highway around 7:00am and was the biggest damn cat I have ever seen

I wouldn't want to have to kill one, just like I won't go out of my way to kill a poisonous snake. I used to hunt Ft Rucker, I've heard them and seen tracks. When I was about 15 I fished a dead one out of our open well, it was a juvenile about the size of a mature bobcat with a long tail, that one was very light, if it hadn't stunk so bad I might have saved the skull. They can say whatever, I know we have them. I recently read something about that they were growing in population in the panhandle, enough to be credited for taking more whitetails than hunters.
Conecuh National Forest connects the panhandle to Covington Co. Pretty awesome to get to see one though!

About 9:00 this morning was going to fill up one of my feeders and replace the batteries in it. Driving down a county dirt road with my hunting lease on both sides of the road when suddenly a huge cat comes across the road about 35 yards in front of me. The big cat crossed in a shady area of the road and I could not get a positive make on its color. I estimate the feline weighed in excess of 50lbs easily. This is the third sighting in my lifetime of a cougar here in Covington County, the first one I saw up close was about 1998 and it was dark gray, the second one I saw about 12 years ago was a dark shade. This cat I saw this morning was dark too but I’m not going to say it was black since it loped across the road in the shade. Game and Fish officials claim there are no cougars/panthers in south Alabama but they are wrong. It’s against the law to kill one in Alabama, how can that be? If they claim the big cats are nonexistent here how can it be against the law? I think laws like this are also on the books if you kill the mythical Bigfoot.
dang, i thought you were talking about a middle aged babe! hoping she was my mythical 6’3” redhead with long legs (female).

Swear I’ve heard one up here. Like a baby scream. Set off every dog in a mile radius. Cows and even donkeys too were set off.

A lot of them have trackers that you can look up. I saw one in south Florida and was able to track down which one by the map. This was South Florida.

If cougars are ever proven to inhabit our area it would have a major impact on land use for developers. There by having a major impact on government income from taxes and development fees

I’ve heard the old timers call them wampus cats too, as well as panthers.

The way land development is going in the south, it wouldn't be surprising to see wildlife out of their usual habitat.

They are definitely in NW Florida. We own land in north west escambia county Florida. I have seen them. First time I saw one walking down our dirt road with a rabbit in its mouth. Probably 6:30-7am ish. In Nov 2016 I was hunting our land and came across a "kitten" that was alone. It did not run from me. I decided if there was a kitten here there must be a mom so I headed back to the house. The little cat followed me all the way back home. Now it was definitely a juvenile cat based on features and playfulness . It hung around the house for two weeks. I say kitten but it weighed 16 lbs and was the size of a large adult domestic feline. Anyway the cat stayed. I am not sayng my Bubba is a cougar or puma or Florida Panther but if he is not some kind of big cat he is a freak of nature. He has some serious murder mittens and I know how dangerous they are. I took a paw to the face and have a scar now across my face from it. I have had stitches twice now from getting bit. Again I am not claiming he is anything other than my Bubba.
