Most of my hog hunting has been associated with nuisance eradication - rather than for meat. I've used an AR15 with inexpensive Monarch (Academy) JSP ammo exclusively. Worked like a champ out to 100 yards and never had a hog get away once hit.
Myself I would never go just for a neck shot,to easy to miss or just graze, thats just my O. Lungs are somewhat better target for me.
Kind of off topic but if there are any farm boys here we only used a 22 to shoot hogs on the farm to butcher. Cattle to,BUT that was between the eyes from 3 feet. WORKED
i don't take neck shots either. my friends dad hunts in GA from a blind where his farthest shot is like 30 yards. hes good at shooting with it and takes the shot. never fails to fill the freezer
Depends on the many variations of the definition of "optimal".
Shooting a 300 pound mule deer with a 300 Weatherby magnum in the hind quarters, doesn't meet the criteria for me. Out west, where bigger is better, a lot of poor shooters, think their mags will compensate for their shooting skills.
And if we were really talking about optimal, we'd be slighting everyone that hunts with a stick and string.
I don't think that's a fair statement. Just my $.02.
