Granted it is a 5 screw & pre-war . Finish is not however factory nor original . Zero collector value , shooter if mechanically sound . Most common model that S&W manufactured , GLWS .

Back then only 2 finishes were polished blue & shiny nickle . Nickle being the more corrosion-resistant of the 2 . Yours appears to be either electroless nickle or possibly hard-chromed . As stated if in good mechanical shape should be a good shooter with standard pressure loads & lead bullets . Stick to lead as it's much kinder on older barrels which are softer than modern steels . With the old long action & being " worn-in " oughta have a very nice trigger .

While I agree with you, I will disagree with one of your points. Just because a firearm has been refinished does NOT mean it has ZERO collector value. It is true that it usually will not bring as much as a firearm that has its original finish in NRA good or better, but if the firearm was in poor condition and then refinished in its original look and type and was applied well, it will be worth more than NRA poor. Usually, a well, correctly refinished gun will be reduced by 1/3 to 1/2 original value but in some cases this isn't true either. In this particular case the refinish was not correct and will have LESS collector value; as as far as collectability, that is an extremely subjective opinion. Some collectors only collect first generation Colt SAA 1873s - refinished or not, while others might collect Hi-points. Who ever thought that any Mosin-nagant in original condition would be collectable? Many WW2 guns were 'refinished' by the Soviets but they are still highly collectable. Yes, I agree that all original, correct firearms are always more "desirable" or appeal to a broader base of collectors.

Considering that it's the most commonly produced model & quality of refinish I stand by my assessment . Add the " Goodyear " grips & I double-down . Attached are pics of a collector grade 1905 4th 38 M&P 1920 vintage from my collection with original box & original Circassian walnut grips numbered to the gun .

2 most important sources of reference on S&W are Jim Supica's Std Catalog https://a.co/d/eZId5dj & Kuhnhausen's repair manual https://a.co/d/9AA2ahb . Amazon links .
    S&W's Military & Police Model has been the company's bread & butter since 1899 . Has been upgraded & refined over the years . Here's another 1905 4th change M&P in 32-20 Win , also pre-war with original box / grips 1927 vintage .
