A retired Air Force mechanic Ken Wutke aka Sarge taught me to always have a set a of cheap sockets because sometimes Snap On won’t fit in the hole. Sarge had thousands of dollars in Mac, Snap On and other expensive tools but he also had cheap sets of sockets and wrenches, the cheap he would take a torch to and bend in whatever shape was needed to make it fit in where he needed it too

you learned something good from a smart man. I have a pile of "homemade" tools.

    ...said no professional tech ever.

We used Snap On and Starret in the pattern shop. We did have some more generic stuff to beat up on, but all the Senior Machinists loved those two. :)

I have some SK socket sets from the 1970s, but their prices went out of sight years ago. I switched to Craftsman for quality USA made tools...well, at least they used to be.

USA craftsman has been over with for years but they are tooling a new factory in Texas since Stanley purchased them. Not sure the current status.

I've seen Craftsman stuff in Lowes and saw a sign for them at Ace hardware...I figured they're being made in China or some such place.

I wouldn't say that at all. They were decent far past that. Nowhere could you get USA tools at a low price when sears offered their sales.
