If you guys ever go to Ft Gaines on Dauphin Island make sure and go when the blacksmith is there. He makes stuff using techniques like that with old equipment and handmade tools. It's really fun to watch.
We went a few months ago and sat there for like a hour just watching him. He didn't make any knives during that session but made a pretty amazing grille fork thing that had a awesome handle design. My mother in law actually bought that and a couple other small hooks for hanging in one of their bathrooms.
