I don't reload I just figured this would be the best place for a thread like this.

Can someone educate me as to what type of bullet will stay intact and not fragment. The last few critters I have shot I was using 225 gr FTX Hornady. They fragmented something awful. Should I be shooting something that is almost entirely lead? I know so little about bullet construction it's not funny.

    Thanks for any help.

First of all, what caliber and what type animal are you shooting? Are you wanting something that will just penetrate, expand and penetrate or just expand and not fragment?

I'm specifically talking about 44 mag shooting hogs. Is there not a one type of bullet that is more solid in construction then the next?

I don't know a whole lot about 44 mag specifically, but I would look into Barnes or some sort of jacketed soft point bullets. Check out Barnes and Buffalo Bore ammo for more info.

If you want a bullet that will not fragment then there are basically four types.

Bonded bullets such a Speer gold dot
Partitioned bullets like nosler partition or swift a-frame.
    Solid "copper" bullets like Barnes.
    Solid hard cast lead.

This is all you need to know about a tough bullet.

I do not know if it's available in factory ammo but many manufacturers do use Barnes bullets in some applications.

    Best bullets ever.
I've shot a lot of different bullets in 357 and gold dots are pretty dang good too. They'll deform beyond recognition and not fragment. Jacketed soft hollow points and jacketed soft points will expand the quickest and have a higher tendency to frag and shed they're jacket. Hard cast don't expand and act just like the Barnes solid coppers except the solid coppers open up like a broad head

    handgun or rifle ??

I use sierra #8630 300gr JSP in both my colt and my rifle with never a fragment, just a solid "bang-flop"when the placement is correct.
its kinda heavy but, its what I have used for years and always never any questions of ability.
yall's mileage may vary because of load development I have done with my firearms.
    good luck

Personally I chose hard cast LBT WFN heat treated with a gascheck . Penatrates like no tomorrow , will break / crush bone & with the large meplat cuts a hell of a wound channel . I've also used the Keith designed FBSWC with good results .
