Since most of us east of the Mississippi harvest deer at close range, what happens when the Government restricts deer hunting to shotgun only?

The National Rifle Association reports some states enforce restrictions on firearm hunters pursuing whitetails. Ten states mandate shotgun only during the firearm season. These states are inclusive of Illinois, Iowa, Ohio, Indiana, Maryland, New Jersey, Massachuetts, Delaware, Maine, and Rhode Island. Three states impose shotgun only restrictions on firearm hunters in designated areas. These include Minnesota, Michigan, and Virginia. Roughly, 25% of all states impose shotgun only restrictions. This minority has produced the majority of all BTR entries.

Just a few years ago Iowa loosened its “shotgun only” season and allowed a bunch of pistol & some straight wall cartridges (only reason I was thinking about getting a 450 Bushmaster) You also gotta think that most are shooting slugs, buckshot is illegal. can use muzzleloaders during that time also.

    (Every state is different tho)

I live in the free state of Alabama. We strive to be last with all new trends and in education.

    Now football. Roll Tide.

When I was a kid everyone deer hunted with a Belgium Browning or an 1100. A few had slug guns. Only the weird uncles had deer rifles.

If you look closely none of those are Southern States (Virginia is no longer "one of us"). The South will never go for this. If you're talking about the feds, I imagine it will be widely ignored.

The 30-30 is still the most popular deer hunting cartridge.

It is not happening and why should it be happening. Most of us here are in AL and FL. I heard of no legal moves by anyone to prohibiting rifles for big game. Why do you come up with such things.
Well here is your answer to

What happens when all the states east of the Mississippi limit hunting to shotgun only?

We will be hunting with shotguns if that is the only device that is legal. Shotguns kill. Just will have to be a little closer.

Some people would like to see us with nothing more than a bow & arrow! But hey, that still kills!
Personally I think that someone is just making to much out of this...

Densely populated areas have imposed those type of restrictions, nothing new there. Similar restriction apply to some military bases that allow some types of hunting and for the same reasons. It tends to close the distance between hunter and animal, better odds of positive ID, may reduce missed shots and increases immediate backdrop awareness. Let's not underestimate the improvements in hunting shotguns over the last 70 years either. You won't be undergunned but may be our ranged.

    This is a non issue.

Well I guess stalking skills will outweigh the ability to perform 400 yard shots if/when the Government limits Hunters to shotguns only. Hasn't seemed to reduce the number of deer taken annually in shotgun only regions?

already have a lever gun in .357 mag and a remy super mag shotty... it won't happen, but it also won't affect me at all. 3 1/2" 00 bucky works just fine on deer. always liked to hunt with a 12ga shotgun anyhow.

What might happen if the antigunner get what they want we will be restricted to single barrel 28 ga and .410 bore shotguns after a lengthy permitting possess. This would be with only a light specified slug without fancy handloading since that would outlawed. All shells would bear a special bar code and the shot and powder would bear special tracers. You could only buy ammo if you turned in your empty shells for recycling and long detailed digital picture and video from your body cam to show what you shot with the ammo . This would be prior to eventually outlawing any hunting or fishing.

Eglin AFB has been shotguns only for deer for many years. I'm pretty sure BP rifles are still allowed though. Either should do the trick! Check with Jackson Guard for specifics. There used to be some nice deer out there!

You can hunt deer with air rifles now. So I don’t think you have to worry about this
There is a demand in the USA to regulate air rifles also via the consumer product safety commission. In the UK there are all sorts of rules that regulate such guns already in force. They regulate through the death of a 1,000 cuts.

From the antigun group giffords: "Though they are significantly less powerful than real firearms, non-powder guns such as BB or air guns can be deadly, and should be regulated as such." https://giffords.org/lawcenter/gun-laws/policy-areas/child-consumer-safety/non-powder-toy-guns/

Uk basically outlawed knives too. Don’t see how this relates to hunting regulations.

There are zones in Arkansas that are shotgun only.
    Mostly along Crowleys Ridge.
It is a 150 mile long ridge that rises above the Mississippi delta in Southeast Missouri and Arkansas.
The elevation above the delta region is not conducive to high powered rifle hunting. With a 500' elevation the bullet could travel for a very long distance before coming down.
The Ridge produces some amazing bucks. Wooded hills with agricultural fields for miles on both sides.
