I’m looking to get a Toyota Tacoma and wondering who has had a 2nd or 3rd gen and how you like it? I’m really wanting a double cab long bed 4wd. Not too many to be had locally that Ive found.

Dad had an 06 that lasted him ~100k miles of driving in DC, sold it with around 170k miles for almost as much as he bought it. Got 3 buddies with 2017, 18, and 19 all have window seal issues, water leaks intothe cab constantly, and 1 had a transmission replaced. Cant personally comment but my 1990 2.4L Toyota single cab runs great! 05-15 with the 4.0L are excellent trucks as long as they are maintained to Toyotas specs.

Personally, I see no reason to get the newer gen ones because of how good the earlier ones are. A 2009 is basically the same truck as a 2015; use the money you save and get a nice double din stereo in it, and buy 5 AKs with the leftover cash!

There's a whole lot of used Tacomas running around in Maine with brand new frames on them. Truck dealers there were having a hard time selling them because they had a reputation for being too lightweight, rusting paper thin, then breaking clean in half upon impact at any kind of speed. Toyota replaced the frames under some sort of recall. Might could get a trade-in there at wholesale price, super cheap, that wont pass a Maine state inspection sticker because of rust elsewhere, but with a new frame, and bring it south for half price what one would go for around here. That's how I got my '04 XLT Lariat 4x4 Offroad, at wholesale as a trade-in that wouldn't pass a Maine State inspection sticker. Drove it for years, in Maine, with a sticker. Saved like half off of retail, put $1,000 in it to pass a sticker, called it good. You bringing yours south, no need for a sticker, you save even more. My cousin Blake did this with a Jeep Cherokee, too. He bought a one way ticket, bought that Jeep from deep behind enemy lines and drove it home, half price. My buddy Oscar, too, actually, with a surplus yankee fire department SUV

Good trucks with strong resell value

The 2 bad things are how you sit in them (like a car with feet under dash) and the gas mileage is not good (lucky to get 16mpg out of the 6 cylinder)

I looked at them and went with an F150

I bought a 2007 Tacoma TRD Sport Double Cab 4wd new. I owned it for over 5 years. Great truck although a few minor glitches. There was problem with the rear leaf springs being too soft. There was a TSB from Toyota that would replace the rear leaf springs. (Once that was done it was fine.) The overhead electronic compass and thermometer died at about 75,000 miles. In very cold weather (I lived in the Smoky Mountains at the time) it did not want to shift into 4wd until it was warmed up thoroughly. (I just left it in 4wd when I knew it was going to be very cold.) The seating position is a bit low for long trip comfort. The TRD Sport package had the locking rear differential and worked so good I could go places in 2 wd that other trucks could only go in 4 wd including my F-150 with 4wd. The Tacoma TRD is very off road capable more so than most full size trucks although not as comfortable.

We had a Tacoma as a supervisor truck up north, running all day between digs, so we wanted it for the better mpg versus the F350's all the foremen got. It had almost 300,000 miles on it last time I saw it. I drove it at well over 200,000 miles to load some hay up for erosion control

Diesel is definitely the way to go if you are towing heavy loads a lot! Although I am certain with the current regime in the White House we can expect diesel to be well over $4 a gallon by the end of the year!

I’ve got an 03 Tacoma regular cab 4x4 I’m flirting with on the idea of selling it, 117,000 miles on it, new tires, they are very good trucks....

Don’t really need the double cab but it’s nice for the extra room for potential passengers and luggage etc...Don’t think I’ll ever get another truck unless it’s a crew/double.
Have had multiple straight axle Toyota pickups and 4runners and 87 & 90 4runner and all well built but the 3.0 v6 of course had head gasket problems. Just never had a 3.4 or 4L. Always looking for early (84-88)ext cab and 4runners if anyone knows where any are. Axles also esp 80-85 fronts that aren’t silver plated.

Leaning towards 05-10 to get it paid off Asap because I despise car payments. Found a few but in AR ,TX ,VA. Lot in AR buys ins auction vehicles and rebuilds them. Has around 10 4wd DC Tacoma’s but prices are too close to clean title trucks to me.
Have a 94 dodge Cummins and 99 f350 powersmoke that I’d like to swap Cummins into but don’t have the facilities(all of them) to pull that off.

Yea I would rather have an F-150 over a Toyota Truck they make nowadays. I have an 2015 Ecoboost Lariat and that engine is a Beast it has never let me down towing heavy trailers.

Back in the day I had a 1995 Toyota Truck the last year they put the straight axel in the front it was a tank and drove like a tank but I loved it. Then I had a 1999 Toyota 4-Runner.

just bought a '17 last week, there are a ton of them on the road so don;t just buy the first one you like . I looked at about 10 before I got exactly what I wanted for the price I needed. your gonna pay at least 25K for a nice one with low miles...I got mine for 32K with 38K miles.

Thanks for all the replies, I’m still looking.
Yeah worried about gas prices also, that’s all part of the plan, to destabilize everything so you never get ahead.
Was looking at this truck but don’t really care for some of the add ons.

    And lot in AR

Be aware that many tacos out there are under a recall for bad low pressure fuel pumps mounted in the fuel tank. I believe 2012 and newer. Check ANY prospective VIN on Toyotas website.
