Works like a red dot on 1x, then just throw that dial to reach out and touch something on 8x. So its really two optics in one without having to call "time out" to swap optics. On the 1x setting this thing is awesome at clearing a house! I've been playing with it going room to room for about an hour now. Also, the amount of eye relief this scope has on 1x is very generous

Minor discrepancy: this scope has the "dot with a circle around it" reticle, not the bullet drop compensator reticle mentioned in the Amazon ad above. Oops. Everything else is the same. The dot is faster for CQB close quarter battle, and the circle is made for fast acquisition of moving targets, so this is a good thing.
