Feinstein schedules second hearing on assault weapon ban

WASHINGTON — The Senate Judiciary Committee will have a full committee hearing on legislation to ban assault weapons the last week of February, the committee announced Thursday.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, a California Democrat who authored the original 1994 ban that expired in 2004, will chair the Feb. 27 hearing, her spokesman Brian Weiss said.

The bill has received stiff opposition from the National Rifle Association as well as members of Congress who favor gun rights over stricter regulation. The Senate version of the bill currently has 21 cosponsors, all Democrats.

The hearing will be the second held by full Senate committee dealing with the congressional response to gun violence.
