A few years ago I acquired a police trade in Remington 870 that was a factory built 14" gun... after the form 4 cleared, this shotty pretty much collected dust.
With my love of turkey hunting, I got to thinking I may have a use for this. So the project began.

As it sits, the barrel has been threaded for RemChokes (Indian creek choke on order)
Receiver tapped (Scalarworks mount and RMR on order)
    Rear ghost sight removed
Factory furniture replaced with magpul furniture
Oversized safety and +1 mag extension installed
Receiver and barrel Cerakoted Midnight bronze and furniture cerakoted in a Bottomland inspired pattern.

Christian at Drunk Irish Customs did the work. You can find him here, or on Facebook.

I'll update when everything gets in and see how it patterns. Should kick like a mule.

This particular gun was factory built from Remington and had to be transferred on a form 4.

Most people choose to go the form 1 route due to the wait times being much less, and you can chop the barrel to your desired length.

    The process.
    1. Acquire the firearm you intend to turn in to an NFA item.
    2. Get 2 sets of fingerprints on ATF fingerprint cards (atf will mail them to you for free, I get fingerprints done at ECSO)
    3. Go to ATF site, start E-file Form 1 process (you will have to set up a profile that you will use for future forms)
    4. When submitting the form 1, you will have to upload a "passport style photo". You can take one with any smartphone against a white wall.
    5. Payment-- payment is submitted during the form 1 process, via CC number. $200 will be the amount due.
    6. Cover letter. Upon submission of the form 1, a cover letter will be emailed to you. You must print this out and mail it to ATF along with your fingerprints within 10 days.
    7. Wait. Once they receive your prints, they go through the process (my 2 form 1s were approved in 10 days)
    8. Approval. Once approved, they will email you the tax stamp, which you print out for your records. It will also be available through your profile on the ATF website that you set up in the beginning.
    9. Engraving. You are now the "manufacturer" of the NFA item. You must engrave your name, city and state on the firearm.
    10. The chop. You can now cut your barrel (or mate the receivers if AR platform) to the length that you filed for.

**keep in mind. This is the rough process to E-file a Form 1 as an individual. The process to file as a trust is different.
There is an Article on Reddit that goes through the entire application process in detail. I will try to find it and post later.

I submitted a paper copy of my Form 1. ATF received the package on 28 August, cashed my check on 2 Sept. I am filing under a NAF Trust, so it will take longer. If you need info, let me know.

I am not very tech savvy, but it took me about 30 minutes to do my first form 1 e file. Side note. The ATF e form website is down on Wednesdays (last I remember) for maintenance.

ECSO was not doing fingerprints all the way from covid till June and when they started doing it they said the machine was down to the public. I ended up going down to the city of Pensacola police dept. All done digitally. Fairly straightforward process.
Passport photos can be done any time of day at walgreens

Name and address have to be engraved? I've never heard this, but never short barreled anything either.

If you file a form 1 to manufacture your own SBR, SBS, DD or Suppressor, yes, you have to engrave as you are the manufacturer.

Stage20, check box 4h on the form 1. ATF makes it a pain, I think to stop people from making these items. That is just a reason for all of us to make SBR's and SBS's.
