Looking at possibly rebarreling a Savage Axis .223 to 300blk. Anyone know a good gun smith or somone who can do it for me? I've been given a couple of referrals but wanted to get a few other options. Thanks!

Ask TennJeep1612. He sent me one that has done some really good work. I accidentally deleted the PM with the info though.

That would be Parish at Great Southern Gun Works - 251-635-1975 or 251-455-9870. His house/shop is behind the Mobile airport. He only works on rifles part time, but his turnaround time was very quick when I used him.

I'm hoping this falls under "labor for custom work" and not the $300 "custom fitting barrel" line. Wow! That would blow my budget. From what I've gather this is a pretty simple task for a good smith. 1hr job kind of thing.

I'll give him a ring tomorrow. Thanks for the info.

Anyone else, possibly closer to Pcola?

I've had one of the Ruger Ranch's on order since January. I'm not sure why Ruger isn't making them but from what I'm reading they are not producing any, and aren't planning to anytime soon. That's why I'm looking at other options.

    Rob, do it yourself.
Get a Savage barrel nut wrench and a .300BLK headspace gauge.

Clamp barrel in vice between two pieces of 1/4" ply wood, take off barrel nut, unscrew .223 barrel, screw on BLK barrel until it bottoms out on headspace gauge, reinstall barrel nut. Done. There is absolutely no reason to pay someone to swap barrels on a Savage.

Mine has been on order since June or July of last year.

Sure. If you can rebarrel an AR you can rebarel a Savage. I'm pretty sure the axis is a small shank barrel but measure to double check.

All you need is a vice and some scrap ply wood or wood blocks to hold the barrel.

You need one of these. These wrenches will allow you to rebarrel any savage currently made and once you buy it you'll always have it for other rifles.

Then a 300blk headspace gauge. You only need the go gauge for a Savage. Don't bother with the no-go gauge.
