If electric cars become as prevalent as many think they will, this type of tax will be necessary to ensure all drivers are being taxed somewhat equally. But they'd better get rid of the fuel taxes at the same time (yeah, like that'll happen), otherwise drivers with combustion engines will be taxed twice for the same services.

we truckers already pay taxes per mile, plus taxes per diesel. Another tax? Guess whom we'll pass the bill to

They already pulled this so instead the gas taxes will go up
    Yes.
To the OP, please post with some context relative to support. Some lefty queer that has no real pull in the congress proposes something. And it is not even a bill. He was just blowing smoke. Taxing the gasoline is essentially the same thing more or less.
Pete Buttigieg was previously the 32nd mayor of South Bend, Indiana and has not real power in the congress

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg on Friday said a proposal that would tax Americans for each mile they drive “shows a lot of promise.”

Asked about various possible funding mechanisms for what’s expected to be a multi-trillion dollar infrastructure bill from the White House, Buttigieg said a mileage tax looks promising.

“If we believe in that so-called user pays principle, the idea that part of how we pay for roads is you pay based on how much you drive, the gas tax used to be the obvious way to do it, it’s not anymore. So a so-called vehicle miles traveled tax, or mileage tax, whatever you want to call it, could be the way to do it,” he said during an appearance on CNBC’s “Squawk Box.”

Other funding possibilities include a new set of bonds, a carbon tax, and an increase of the gas tax.

If the latter is featured in the legislative proposal, people should keep in mind it’s more of a temporary measure, Buttigieg said.

I waiting for the carbon tax levied every time we exhale. Probably shouldn't have mentioned something not yet taxed.
Put a tax on high carbon foods that cost a lot of energy to produce like meat and anything on the upper end of the food chain.

This was proposed by an unsuccessful presidential candidate who was an unsuccessful mayor of a relatively small town in NE Indiana. Who was an unsuccessful Catholic that switched to a religion that would be accepting of his unorthodox life style choice.

    Times they are a changing.

The problem with changing the taxing structure of taxation for miles/electricity/gas is who gets the money. Municipalities rely on gas taxes but won’t get any of the electrical tax money from cars unless something changes.

Why do people think gas tax needs to be equal per mile or weight of vehicle etc...? School tax is NOT equal! You pay it when you have no kids, kids in public school, kids in private school, even if they have graduated.

So please enlighten me on why we are not charging road taxes across the board even to those who do NOT drive?

I guess they need to tax bus and taxi passengers too. Double tap families with school kids that ride school buses. Its really not about miles, its about "raising taxes" as much and as fast as possible. Its also not about using the tax revenue to pay ever mounting debt: it about starting to collect more so they can obligate MORE funds for new crap and things that don't benifit a single American, then those things becomes reoccurring mounting debt that can't be cut off. And they will want MORE!!!

Companies are already bailing out of the U.S. Headquaters and banking relationships go first followed by the actual manufacturing or they just contract it in some cheaper labor and lower tax country.

Damn Pepsi. Did they ever change the ingredients? I heard their spokesmouth claimed it was "only aborted fetal stem cells used in labs for taste testing, and they weren't even Pepsi owned labs".... keep trying to justify it and distance yourselves, Pepsi, because in the end each one of those responsible will stand alone in front of the Judgement Seat of God

That's right. The non-drivers still benefit from the goods and services on the road

It's really all about money redistribution, all the way to the top of the food chain, because we have big government (controlled by big business) taking our money to build infrastructure so that big business can keep taking our money. And in the end, when we've all been New Green Deal'ed into being broke slaves living in scyscraper cubicles or labor camps and we all have bicycles or walk instead of cars, and we're all eating damn bug patties with only a 30 year life expectancy, then maybe the next generation will throw off oppression once again. It'll start with us as grandpa's telling stories of how it used to be, when Americans were on top, we were eating steak, popcorn and icecream daily and driving whatever we wanted where we wanted as fast as we wanted and inspiring freedom

Damn Pepsi... "it's only baby stem cells we used". Dont forget, its cancerous murdered aborted baby tissue used to grow what's needed in every one of the Covid vaccines, too. All transported on the roads we pay for.

We're already taxed by the mile at the Federal level, every time we fill the tank. So basically, they want to tax us twice for the same thing. Remember, the government produces absolutely nothing. The only things they can give you, are things they have first stolen from another person.
Also, we were taxed when we were paid..... Born free, taxed to Death.
