I want to give a red dot a try on one of my pistols. Candidate is likely my Gen 3 Glock 19 because of
    the massive aftermarket.

I’m thinking that for both convenience and maybe cost, I’m best off just buying an aftermarket slide already cut. If I’m wrong on that and it’s way smarter to send my slide off please let me know.

Regardless, I need to know what brand slides are considered great quality. I’m talking reliability and maybe nice features for carry, not really interested in Gucci appearance stuff. So bottom line, where should I be looking for a cut slide for reliable carry on a Gen 3 g19? Probably going to try one of the holosun options, and would be happy to hear recommendations on that too.

Not really interested in starting up the discussion on red dot or no. I’m gonna try one for myself and decide.

    Thanks for recommendations in advance!

I second what kaufdrop said. The brownells slides are very good options especially for dipping your toes into the red dot game. I have multiple and haven't had any issues with any of them. I also really like how deep their cut is, allowing the dot to sit as low as possible. With the Holosun 507c I can get away using the tall Glock OEM rear metal sight. Brownells also regularly has sales on them for just over $200. I use one on my daily carry gun pictured below.

Vastly prefer a well-set-up Green Laser.
But since I do have a pistol that came with a slide-cut-out,
eventually there will be an optic mounted to it.

Once you've gone green laser w/ Iron sights,
kind of hard to backtrack to something fat above your slide
that is less capable than a laser for precise shots out to 100 yards
with a 10mm loaded with Buffalo Bore.

Note, that laser shown above is HUGE, must be 1st gen...
a new Viridian C5L Green barely adds any mass.

Not a fan of lasers, but thanks. Only ever shot my Tens with irons and double tap, but definitely to each his own.

I wasn't until I watched a Crimson Trace video about 8 years ago...
then a lightbulb went on in my head...reminded me of the Predator movie...
and since pratice shooting from odd angles and positions is a regular
thing for me, it really adds shot direction potential at times when
one literally couldn't shoot precisely otherwise.

Not to mention they work Bleeping Awesome on Hog hunts ;)
Put green dot on hog's head, BANG, dead.

Actually, there's an optic by Leupold that DOES NOT REQUIRE slide chopping.
It's called the Deltapoint Micro, and it mounts to your standard dovetail.
Totally solves the whole Slide Hacking issue.

This might go well with an RMR https://shockwavetechnologies.com/doj-atf-on-stabilizing-braces/

    DOJ/ATF on “Stabilizing braces”
    DUNEDIN, FL, December 17, 2020:
With the overnight news of the DOJ/ATF releasing information on how the FATD classifies firearms with “stabilizing braces,” Shockwave Technologies has been inundated with phone calls and emails. Let us assure you that, to the best of our knowledge, our ATF-approved pistol stabilizers remain 100% legal for pistol use. Shockwave has not been contacted by the ATF regarding any of our pistol stabilizers in several years.
It’s business as usual for us.

The endo adaptor comes on and off in just a moment. With the KAK armbrace for the moment it needs no paper work. With stock shown in the video it likely does need paper work with the ATF.
