Was cleaning my rifle after ~15 rounds today. Total rounds fired less than 100, cleaned after each use and never corrosive ammo. Noticed the rear of the bolt is showing what looks line corrosion behind the gas ring. Is this sort of thing normal on ARs? Rest of the BCG looks fine, bolt is a new Griffin Armament nitride BCG.

It’s difficult to tell from pics although they are good pics! It almost appears to be built up carbon, which would be normal and would scrape off but if it’s pitting/corrosion, that’s not normal!

Yeah first pic looks like normal carbon. Second one I assume is after scraping off. That one almost looks like some finish came off too, but with nitride I wouldn’t thing it would flake off like that so I’m not sure I’m seeing it right. Kind of doubt it will affect function either way, maybe just keep an eye on it.

Yeah, tried brushing with a brass wire brush, didn't look much different before or after. I'll keep an eye on it as I use it and see if anything changes. Rifle still shoots and ejects fine. Appreciate the quick replies guys!

Carbon build up... normal... they sell various tools and such to do a better job at scraping the carbon off.

I use a metal pick to flake the carbon off. Sometimes a knife blade works well.

Wait until you dump about 1K rounds in a weekend class... then you will see some build up.
