Really looking forward to season here. The deer aren't too big or too many but I am just glad to have a spot to go (near Jay). Had my first public land experience on MCB Quantico; 48,000 acres of land available, plenty of room for the hunters with access. When I PCS'd down here, I tried public land and got turned off by the poachers and folks leaving trash/shooting just to shoot etc. I have never understood paying to hunt in a club until moving here; back in TX leases are the exception not the rule, everyone would share land or hunt together. But man I totally get why someone would pay to hunt on a place like yours! Well put-together, intentional and ethical hunting in an area where you can't find hunting like that. Good stuff Dixie Reb.

One solution I was hoping to find here was a club that would have some sort of active duty membership or guest fee. Many of my peers have never hunted and I want to get them on their first deer (just a meat deer, like for youth) but there are no options unless you know someone with private land. But as soon as I put myself in a club manager's shoes, I wouldn't imagine anyone wants short term strangers asking for a deal on a couple cull deer.

I was in my stand by 4:50 am, walked all the way to it in the bright moon light, could see all around me just as soon as I sat down, popped a doe at 6:20 am with my slug gun, will make jerky out of entire deer for my kids and grandkids, the 870 Remington 12 gauge thumps them hard, always drops them on the spot.

Since I left club so early this morning with my doe I don’t know what else was shot, I did get several texts of pics from other members that were wrapped up with turkeys on the food plots before I left. Will be glad when this moon phase is over , in my experience over the years I see less deer movement with the moon out.

Yea, I have a lease in Jay and usually I’m just happy to get in the woods and enjoy being alone, but with the price of meat under Biden I’m filling the freezer this year !!!! Been throwing peanuts and corn out and excited about this season !!!!

Did your club fine your wife for that buck she shot ??
Seems to me that a nice mature doe would be more appropriate. Especially at this time of the year. --- SAWMAN

That’s interesting, I wonder if is generic or has something to do with the local environment?

About. 3 seasons back I saw a 6 pt buck that looked almost black, nobody believed me until another person saw it at same location couple of weeks later , I wonder if the doe could be the offspring of the black buck?

I was cold this morning, 31 degrees sitting at a small plot by a beaver pond, guess you can say I wussyed out this morning and used a little buddy heater. Sat in light rain for two days this week in a tree climber so today I said I was going to sit comfortably this morning. Laugh if you want too, but no need in roughing it if you don’t have to…
