Hello gents. Picked up a 20 gauge 870 Wingmaster today that was pretty crusty, but it cleaned up nice! Thought it'd be fun to try and figure out when it was made.

It's mfg code on the barrel is PLI, which indicates it was made in 1964, 1991, or 2018. Does anyone with more knowledge on the Wingmaster series have any idea when this guy might of been made?

Stock is checkered with a plastic buttplate, metal trigger guard, checkered wood foreend that covers the receiver when back, and no "read manual" warning on the barrel. Fixed modified choke is stamped on the barrel, though it looks like the barrel was cut down at some point to 18.5" (no bead sight or spot for a bead). Muzzle cap is the ball bearing kind, not the ratcheting cap of the new ones.

    Any insight appreciated, thanks!

You have one of the original 20 gauge 870s. The X at the end of the serial number indicates that it is a 12 gauge frame with a 20 gauge barrel. Replacement barrels are almost impossible to find and if you do find one it will be pricey. Sorry I can’t help with the exact date of manufacturer. I have one just like it but no mods except to change the bead to a fiber optic front sight.

Looks like the two of you guys figured it out! X frame puts it before 1977, so it isn't a 91 or 2018. This guy was made in 1964. Much appreciated gentlemen!
