There was a question a while back about Molly coated bullets so I thought I would share this since I had a little time this morning.

Went by Lowe's yesterday and picked up a can of BarKeeper's Friend powder...$2.16
I had a bottle of clear Publix's ammonia...not sure what it cost.

I mixed 1 tbs of BarKeeper's Friend in 1C of warm water in a Mason Jar
I used enough ammonia to cover the bullets in the bottom of another jar.

I thought this would be the easiest way to run it in my ultrasonic without any clean up.
I ran them both for a normal 180 cycle.

I'm not sure where I picked these up but someone may recognize them.

There were only a few in the box.

After running them in the ultra sonic here are the images after a thorough rinse.

these are the ones from the ammonia. I let them soak in it while I ran the ones with the BarKeep for the 180 cycle

These are the ones from the BarKeep mix. As you an see the majority of the Molly came off of both with the BarKeep doing a little better job. This is after the rinse and I dried them on the paper towel. The molly continued to come off on the towel from the BarKeep.

Once they dried I ran them in corncob media with Nu-Finish in my Thumbler's Tumbler for 30 minutes each to finish them up.

With minimal effort I now still have bullets that are very suitable for plinking and well as deer harvest.

Yep... I've tumbled previously moly-coated bullets successfully.

Educate me... what's with the ammonia? Seeing as ammonia is used to cut copper, such as in Sweet's 7.62,...? Do guys etch bullets prior to moly coating?

No Sir…just clean them with denatured alcohol usually.

I saw that someone was hesitant to buy some bullets that had been molly coated and I was trying to show how easy it was to get it off with minimum effort. I had read ammonia and BarKeepers got it off easy. It looks like the acid in Barkeepers does a little better job than the ammonia.

Seeing as ammonia is a key ingredient in copper removing cleaning products for the bore, I'd recommend not using it to clean bullets as it most likely will dissolve some of the jacket surface, albeit minimal, it still will happen.

No Sir, it was only in the solution for 2 180 second intervals before the rinse.

Remembering- - -> PRECISSION SHOOTER MAGAZINE also stated that after PROPERLY moly coating your bullets,and your bbl,the ONLY thing needed to clean your bbl/chamber was WD-40.
