I'm going to be having catalytic converter replacement surgery done soon on my truck, and I was thinking about telling them I want the old one back. I understand they contain precious metals that might be worth a few bucks.

I'm curious if anyone here has sold an old catalytic converter and if it was worth the trouble? I read that some scrap metal yards may require a photo and/or fingerprint be taken before they'll buy one because of scrap metal thieves, and I'm not really down for that. However if the money was good enough I could change my mind.

Well that's a good idea, and there's Garry's Auto Recycling right here in Crestview. Since I posted the question I've found there are some online buyers too that may pay better, and some will pay the UPS shipping.

I would think a copy of the purchase invoice for the new one would cover any concerns of theft. Never been fingerprinted, but they have checked my ID.
I’ve done this whenever I’ve purchased a new cooling unit, replaced ice machines, or home central unit. It’s mine so why can’t I get the recycling money.
I’ve scraped a lot of stuff!

Speaking of scrapping stuff... Where do people take aluminum cans down here?

Alabama and Florida regs are the difference.

I took them to Southern Scrap on Palafox a time or two but after getting $6 for a big leaf bag of crushed cans it’s not worth my time.

Your time would be better spent walking along the street looking for lost change. Scrap iron is worth more

Not true. Some cats are worth more than others but they are all worth more than loose change.

What online forum? Site do you use to sell them? eBay?

Here's some links I had found earlier with a cursory look but I'm sure a more thorough Google search would produce more and possibly better ones. I also found out that Garry's Auto Recycling here in Crestview does not buy them.

Thank you for your input, but I won't be using the online services.
