Lead seems to be harder to source now than in years past.

    Where are y’all getting lead?
Some metal scrapyards resell it. Since most new wheelweights are zinc or zinc alloyed, the tireshop source is out. Big Iron Environmental in Fort Walton Beach sells lead.

Depending on where you are at {not listen in your online profile ?} and where you shoot , some ranges allow backstop "mining" . Just need a shovel , buckets , and a screening system. Depending on what you cast for , pistol or rifle you can or not , pick out the jacketed bullets

How did you ever find an attorney?

I once drove by there and I have been contacted by at least 100 attorneys.
I guess I'm lucky , as I was stationed at CLNC for nearly 2 years and haven't had to deal with any "bottom feeders" but then I haven't signed up.

I’ve been casting boolits for about 25 yrs. I love it!! 9mm, 45 colt, 45 acp, 303 british, 30-30, and now the 300 blk. As a matter of fact, just ordered another mold yesterday.
    I now powder coat everything!!

I cast both rifle and pistol. My current 358 win load (2150 fps) is grouping 1 11/16" at 200 yards and my 44 Mag 245gr Keith style SWHP (1200 fps) are grouping at 3.5" at 50 yards out of my model 69. I also make my own bullet lube (Bens Red) and gas checks.

I cast and shoot thousands each year. I‘ve not hunted with them, but did dispatch some trapped wild hogs with the 12mm Swedish rolling block.

    6.5 Swede
    7mm Mauser
    7.5 Swiss
    256 Win mag
    30-30 AI
    308
    30-40 Krag

    44 Special
    43 Spanish
    11.7 Danish
    45-70
    12x44 Swede
    303 British
    310 Cadet

I might try casting for the 32 H&R magnum, as I already have a suitable mold for it.
Talk to Daezee. He's reloaded the British 577/450 and I think 45-70 paper patch

Tell me about the gas checks, are they made out of beverage cans? Do they work the same as copper, and is there some type of kit to make them? The price of copper gas checks has really shot up.

@fisheadgib - Aluminum gas checks work just like their copper cousins. I have noticed no difference in accuracy. I make mine out of Amerimax .014 aluminum roof valley flashing using a one shot die. There are a couple of check makers on the market but many of them make it a multi-step process which I dislike.

I slice/cut the flashing into strips (using a paper cutter) that are slightly larger than desired size and simply punch them out. I use an eight ounce coke bottle to catch them at the top of the die. Once I have the strips cut and everything set up I can make hundreds per hour. They are not "Gator" style checks but I do not have an issue with them coming off. Of course having a proper shank cut into the mold along with the proper alloy for the size helps a lot lol. Also, they are neatly cut and do not look crinkled at the rim like many of the can style checks (too thin for me).

The price for roof flashing has increased but simple math will give you the price. A quick check online is $100 for a 50'x14" roll. That is the equivalent of 72,000 gas checks for .358 or a cost of $1.38/1,000ct checks. Assuming that you're not a miser like me and loose 10% material loss due to larger strips or wider spacing between holes and you're still only at a buck fifty per thousand checks. I love the look of copper checks on my bullets but for the price difference I'll keep mine lol.

Thank you for the links. It’s certainly something to consider. I just went through 4000+ copper gas checks doing all the .303 bullets I’d cast up.

As a much less expensive alternative to Lyman or Hornady gas checks, visit https://www.sagesoutdoors.com/gas-checks/

More expensive than making your own, but lots cheaper than the above name brands. Been using them for a few years now. No difference in accuracy or impact point or fitting to the bullet.

Oneshot: Thanks for the compliment, but I just consider myself a reasonably knowledgeable individual, and know what works for me.

Casting is a labor of love. I used to do it all the time.... for 20 years or so, then life got in the way. Now it's easier to buy online with so many choices, have them arrive in less than a week, load and go shoot! I'd rather spend my time shooting anyway. YMMV

Brasshog, thanks for the reply. I had a friend that made gas checks years ago that used beverage cans and it was a multi step process with a high failure rate. It wasn't worth the trouble to me at the time. Now that copper checks have gone up so much in price, it's worth revisiting. The setup you linked seems like the way to go. Thanks again.

I’ve been casting handgun boolits for years…I do the HF shake-n-bake, size and shoot. So far .45ACP, 40 S&W, .38, 9mm, and .327 Fed Magnum. I plan on 45-70, 30-06/.308 for my M1’s and also 30-30 soon.

Back in the day when I was casting I had a 170gr mold for the thutty-thutty that dropped around 173grs. I believe it was a Lyman mold. Was devastating on deer and pigs.
