I do not believe there is a length limit for a pistol, but obviously the longer it is the less practical it is. Most people build an AR pistol to SBR it at a later date. Other than velocity concerns you need to know what you are building the pistol for, HD, plinking, Hunting and go from there.

Smitty, I need what someone would use for any AR build, bench vice, torque wrench, multi tool, (I loaned mine out). I do have some tools and am willing to come to the location of the tools, should not really take that long, may need adjustments after the function test. Also knowledge as I have never done one from scratch...

I am not sure about costing less...I do know that upper weighs more than my entire unloaded pistol with a scope(5 lbs). Also not sure if you want a 1-9 twist with a 7" barrel??

I added up all the individual parts and it does indeed cost less than if I were to purchase all the parts and assemble it myself. I didn't pay attention to the weight and my other AR is a 1-9 twist and I didn't think it would matter much that it was short.

I still think I can build it cheaper, lighter and with what I want, but you may be right....All the 556 AR's I have had are 1-7 not 1-9 which is better for heavier bullets and hunting...I don't plink so my mindset is always what is best to kill an animal...your use may be different.

I got one for the hell of it once, it was a 10-1/2 carbine gas, it was handy and it ran fine. I think I took it to shoot twice then got rid of it immediately. I just saw it as a big compromise and traded it out for a 16inch rifle. I just hate not being able to shoot it like a rifle without a stock and you still have the RE poking out the back. If its just another toy to play with go for it but I'm warning ya, your gonna be real tempted to put a stock on it. Another thing to think about is all the velocity you give up if you go 5.56 especially under 10 inches. I think something like a 6.8 or blackout would be better for a pistol build.

If I was home, I'd let you borrow my tools. Heck, I'd even help you build it. If in two months you still need help...I should be available then.

I use the instructions from AR15.com for the lower build and a series by user Gavintoobe on youtube for the upper. Here's the first series.

Oh, I don't do the headspacing like he does.
