I’ve always wanted a rem700. Decided on 308 for numerous reasons.

But now I’m thinking the current “budget” 700s aren’t what they’re cracked up to be so I gotta go “upgraded”. But I’m really liking what I’m seeing about the Bergara B-14s.

So, Do I deviate from the 700 (knowing I’ll prob still have that itch) and focus on just getting a nice rifle (buying with my brain). Or do I stick with letting the 308 simply be my mechanism for getting a 700 (buying with my heart).

I’m torn between checking the rem 700 box just because I want one. Or turning from the rem 700 to get something better....potentially still leaving me wanting a rem700 “just to have it.”

    have it narrowed down to:

    Appx $1000:

    R84203
    Appx $1200: https://www.rsrgroup.com/product/REMR85196

    Appx $900: https://www.rsrgroup.com/product/BERB14S521

    Thoughts??

I’ve got an original Abolt in 30/06 and an Abolt 2 in 30/06.
I would find one of those in your preferred caliber. I don’t think the Abolt 3 is the same quality.

Model 700’s are a proven platform mainly because of the availability of aftermarket triggers. The platform has almost become modular with so many options for the footprint to drop into a chassis or stock. Keep in mind that the Begara accepts model 700 triggers and drops in most model 700 stocks and chassis with no modifications.

What are your intentions for this rifle? Hunting? Precision? Paper puncher?

I have 700s and some high end clones.

I have shot some of the Bergara in 6.5 Needmoor but not .308. They are .5MOA out of the box or better in my opinion or at least the few I have shot even with factory ammo. I can only imagine them being better with hand loads.

I doubt you will find that with a Patriot. You could very well with a Savage if you were lucky.

If I was in the marked for a precision hunting factory rig Bargera would be at the top of my list

I purchased a TC Venture II all weather on a whim. Put a Vortex Diamond Back scope on it took it out and shot it, unbelievable trigger and very accurate. Was skeptical of a budget price rifle. Now one of my favorite 308's.

If you plan on actually shooting that Remington 5-R it’s going to need a brake. It’s good to go as is if you will only be shooting a deer or two per year. Factor in the cost of getting the muzzle threaded if you plan to shoot at the range

Yeah. It’s threaded for it so that’ll be #2 on the list (sandwiched between glass and a removable magazine bottom plate).

    What's your budget?

don't overlook the stock. When people get into shooting long-range, they tend to gravitate towards the detachable magazine option. replacing the stock down the road will cost money and the money you spend will be close to a custom build price. I think Bergara edges the 700 when it comes to stock options.

I like the angle of the handgrip on the 700 linked above. But both stocks seem like great options. The Bergara is “soft touch”.

I can vouch for Bergara B-14. 308, 6.5CM,300 WIN MAG, all right at 1/2 moa if you know you ammo and do your part.
Another recommendation I would give for a similar price range is Christensen Arms.
The one nice thing I can say about Bergara is you can get the same rifle in .22lr. Same bolt throw, same dimension magazine, same ergos, that is great for training and a lot cheaper to shoot.
The triggers on all of them are adjustable to below 2lbs, and all of mine are closer to 1lbs 4oz. Factory TriggerTech triggers are amazing, and break like lightbulb glass.

The availability of Badger aftermarket and ease of finding gunsmiths for the 700 make it one of the best for extended use at extended range. There is a reason why the Army selected the 700 for it's M24's.

There are many good aftermarket BM companies. CDI right there in FL is what I run in my 700P in the HS Precision stock it came with...works as well as the Badger Ordinance block that is in my Manners stock that's on my Stiller Action Custom.

That 5R is also fluted so it can only be as rigid in the 20" as the minimum dimension.
