Just got a K98 that as some surface rust on it. Turned out to be a little more than I expected in some places. Any cleaners you guys can recommend that won't hurt the finish?

I used a product called Blue Wonder a while back. IIRC the company is in Australia; Internet order. Anyway, it is a gel you rub on and wipe off and it worked great for me without damaging bluing.

#0000 steel wool and any penetrating oil of your choice. I use either transmission fluid or CLP if it needs to be cleaned some as well. Both work just fine, I just grab whatever is closest at the time. If you don't already own some, I recommend getting some of the small plastic bottles with needle dispensers. I'll attach a link to show what I'm talking about. I put all my gun cleaning fluids into these and they're great for getting into tight areas and dispensing small amounts at a time. Link to plastic bottles with needle tips.

lightly rub it with a penny made prior to 1982 and a good quality oil...when the oil gets cloudy wipe it of and reapply.

Ultrasonic. Cleans rust without marring finish.
I've gone sonic on several things. I paid the gunsmith to do it, but Cabelas sells everything needed to do a sonic cleaning at home. It will literally suck the rust right out of the inside of pitting. Good to go! You gotta do a good hot CLP soak immediately afterwards though too because it will take all the oils out of the metal too

Other then the barrel, (Its alittle hard to see) But if I had to have rust those are in darn nice places to have rust. I would start with the steel wool with oil and see how good you can clean them up. As long as the buttplate looks good on the outside you can fix up that corrosion and stabilize the piece. Good news is thats an easy piece to replace on the cheap.

Those parts with rust should clean up and be near invisible when you put the rifle back together.

Better photos of the barrel would help.
