So I got this little .410 on an online auction, somewhat unexpectedly. Never thought my lowball bid would win! Well most of you don’t know me but I am pretty much an OCD perfectionist. The stock on this thing was fairly beat up. I cannot, just cannot live with that. Thought about sending it off to have it refinished. Then I considered doing it myself to save some money on the project. The plan is to make it as close to the finish on my Beretta shotguns as possible.

I will post pics of the project as it goes along. Should take a week or two.
    Here are some before pics.

I'm thinking it would be fun to have an old "beater" gun like that to take out to the range on a cold day like today and just shoot and have fun with. I understand where you're coming from though. Your project is looking good.

That was some pretty wood under that stain. Good job saving the checkering also.
Taped over all checkering with two layers of blue tape before any sanding.
stripped the existing finish with Citrus aerosol stripper and a small stiff brush about the size of a toothbrush. the old varnish came right out of the checkering.
    Thanks!

Stained today. I’ll give it 24 hours or so to dry and evaluate the color. May add more stain or start with first coat of Tru Oil.
The fore end is a slightly different color, oh well it’s not a 2k shotgun. As long as it looks better than when I got it, I’ll be happy.

Applied the first coat of Tru Oil. I’ll let this dry for a day, rub down with 00 Steel wool and apply another coat. Three or four coats of Tru oil and a few super thin coats of poly, she will be done.

    Would not be for me.
I prefer a dark oiled ,flat finish on my wood.
I am fixing to start a project after JJ works his magic. Will need info on the oiled finish look.
Hopefully will not have to replace any wood, just strip and refinish.
How your firearm looks is as varied as the truck you drive or the whiskey you drink.
    EVERYONE IS RIGHT !!
Great info, great project. I learned several things ... it was a good day.
Thank you sir for this great writeup. ---- SAWMAN
