Just got a 6.5" Ruger blackhawk and kinda want to take it hog hunting. I've loaded a ton of .38 range ammo in my life and good bit of rifle and 9mm ammo both for range and defensive/hunting purposes, but I've never to my memory, loaded any .357 Magnum rounds in any flavor.
Anyone have experience hog hunting with a .357 and what projectile/powder combination would you recommend?

I haven’t loaded for my .357’s in years but I have been super impressed with the Hornady Leverevolution 140 grains loads on hogs and deer so far. I am mainly shooting them out of either my Ruger 77/357, Winchester 94-357 or a S&W 686 with either a 6” or 8 3/8” barrel. Most of those shots have been taken at 20-50 yards. I haven’t had anything go further than about 10 yards with a heart or double lung shot. Devastating results. I have done a couple head shots on hogs and immediate lights out.

Remington used to make a 180gr HTP load. It was rated at about 1200 fps.

I've loaded lots of the Remington 180gr jhp bullet crimped hard over 12.0 gr of AA#9 in a Contender for long range metallic silhouette in new or nearly new brass. Also the 180 TMJ Speer but that wouldn't be good for hunting.

Take care when loading near max.

I appreciate the hell out of that .pdf. thanks

Magtech makes a Factory Loaded 180 Grain .357 Mag Load. Lyman lists a 195 Grain Cast Projectile with an accuracy load utilizing 5.5 grains of Unique Powder at a rate of 942 fps if your seriously interested?

I use a hard cast 170 Keith bullet with 15 gr of W296. I haven’t shot a hog with it but I bet it would be a pass thru from head to butt. If you would like to try some I have plenty.
I forgot to mention I powder coated them , haven’t had leading in the Black hawk or Henry.

Remember to work up the load slowly , and use a gas check on the heavy cast bullets loads , If you can use the 180 or even 200 grain , The gas check will keep from leading up the barrel If you shoot for the head be sure to be straight on hit one and it just took the hide off and had to use a rifle to stop him. Have seen what happen when the top strap and cylinder goes , so stay in spec. and don't get to inventive. just my 5 cents jj

H110 and 296 powders are your friend for heavy .357 loads. for adult male hogs I would go hard cast flat nose bullets of at least 150 grains and one can go heavier.
