Take the barrel out. Plunk test in the chamber several different brands of cases and bullet profiles. Round should seat and fall out with gravity. Check for marks on the case or on the bullet ogive. You may have a burr in the chamber or a very short throat.

Yes, it's an 1884 .45-70. I think the trapdoor is a sleeper in today's market. Wonderful examples abound for under a k. You must handload imo, but easy peasy and about as inexpensive as you can get.
I've been around the horn a bit on surplus rifles. Starting in the mid 80's during the second big wave, and then again during the third wave late 90's. Sadly I think the "waves" are history.

Enfield SMLE's and No. 4's, Mosins, Mausers German, Czech, Swedish, M95 mannlicher, 1903...

No one has mentioned the expiration of the awb in (`94-`04). During those 10 years if you could only have 10 rounds in the same size gun, .40 made more sense than 9. A positive aspect imo during the ban was the resurgence of the 1911 in .45 for the same reasons, limited capacity.
With mag bans...
I wouldn't buy anything with a lightened aluminum slide. Go get an all metal Browning Buckmark or a Ruger Mark whatever. Neither are ammo finicky. They will last forever and make you both better shooters.
