Serious question….….I’m getting ready to outfit my 16” AR and haven’t been able to make up my mind yet. What say you is the best for 300yds and in for your truck gun/SHTF set-up?

I will put it this way. This is my SHTF rifle (M4A1 SOPMOD Block II clone).

It is perfectly capable of hitting a man-size target at 300 yards. For those who have poor eyesight, a flip-type magnifier can be used in conjunction with a red dot. A LPVO is not all that great in close quarters and the magnification is not needed at distances less than 100 yards.

Had a guy attend class a couple weeks ago, he used a LPVO. Towards the end of the class he mentioned something along the lines of not being sure if it was best suited for the drills and shooting we were doing. We stayed at 50 and in.

In a SHTF situation, avoiding contact would be a primary survival tactic, so as such, I don't see myself taking shots at distances... where the LPVO would shine.

I'd attempt to keep a spare set up with a VPO just in case but it wouldn't be my primary.

For me, I'd go with a RDS and BUIS of course.

LPVO does it all and doesn’t need batteries. Run drills with one, I’m just as fast with LPVO as a red dot or Eotech. Plus you get some magnification when needed

There's certainly pros\cans when comparing the two, specific to a SHTF scenario, as much as I like LPVOs I'd opt for a red dot or maybe a 2x prism or similar. With anything, practice\training is going to make it effective.

To me, SHTF typically means you have one rifle. It works for hunting, self defense, glassing, close quarter, plus anything else, etc.. Neither will be great at all but you have to choose where you compromise, which is up to you.
