    A friend is considering buying a BCA Upper. With a 10.5" barrel, does a pistol length gas system provide better performance over a carbine length gas system, or Vice Versa? What would be the Pros and Cons for both. Ammo for it would be a mix of Brass Case and Steel Case, Milsurp and Commercial. I have had no experience in the pistol length x39's. I would really like factual information to pass on, not hypothetical. I have only had experience with a 16" owned by an "In Law" family member.

    A 10.5" barrel is going to have a faster cyclic rate with a pistol length gas system than one with a carbine length gas system. That will increase recoil which will be more violent. Personally, I would not use a 10.5" barrel with a pistol length gas system. I would want something chambered in 7.62x39 to shoot smoother. As for performance, look at it like this. Once the gas has existed the barrel through the gas port, there is no longer a lot of force propelling the projectile out of the barrel on a pistol length gas system 10.5" barrel as the gas port is still about 5" shy of the muzzle. One the same type of barrel with a carbine length gas system, the gas port is about 2.5" from the muzzle which means that the gas is staying in the barrel longer and the projectile will have more velocity when it leaves the barrel thus giving better accuracy.

    I had a short 7.62x39, IIRC it was 10" and I couldn't sell it fast enough. It was like a concussion grenade going off and a basketball size fire ball. It did work OK, and some folks like that loud / muzzle flash stuff, but not I.

    That is the downside to a large caliber, short-barrel setup. 5.56x45 round out of a 10" barrel produces a ball of fire, but it does not kick nearly like a 7.62x39 round does.
